The second apparatus includes a first retention surface; a second retention surface; a retention mechanism; and a tightening mechanism. The method includes providing a knot holder that includes a retention surface, a retention mechanism and a tightening mechanism; placing the knot holder around a knot, fastening a first end of the retention surface to a second end of the retention surface; and tightening the knot holder against the knot with the tightening mechanism.
