  • Patent number: 9759252
Abstract: A shaft assembly includes one or more axially-arranged plies having a plurality of bundles of strands. Each strand is formed of a ultra-high modulus carbon fiber material. One or more strands of glass fiber are wrapped around each bundle of the plurality of bundles. A volume of resin injected into the one or more axially-arranged plies and the assembly is cured via a resin transfer molding process. A method of forming a shaft assembly includes arranging a plurality of strands of ultra-high modulus carbon fiber material into a plurality of bundles. Each bundle of the plurality of bundles is wrapped with one or more strands of glass fiber material. The plurality of bundles are arranged into one or more axially-extending plies at a mandrel. A volume of resin is injected into the plurality of bundles and is cured to form the shaft assembly.

  • Publication number: 20050099769
Abstract: The invention provides an expandable modular enclosure system for enclosing circuit boards connected by a stackable bus. The enclosure system includes one or more carriers and spacers, a base unit, and a top unit. The spacers and carriers are alternately stacked between the base unit and top unit, and each circuit board is mounted to a carrier. A side portion with recessed vents extends from one side of each carrier, and each carrier and spacer define an opening. Air flows through the vents, over each circuit board, and through the openings in the carrier to cool the circuit boards. Circuit boards with varying functionality can be included in the enclosure, and as many circuit boards as are necessary can be enclosed without increasing the size of the footprint of the enclosure.

  • Publication number: 20050099521
Abstract: This invention relates to a camera head enclosure apparatus configured to allow the interchangeability of photo-electric pixel arrays for use in various applications. A personality plate specifically configured to receive and secure a photo-electric pixel array of a particular configuration provided on a chip is disclosed. The invention allows a user to interchange photo-electric pixel arrays, and their respective personality plates, while using the same camera head enclosure, thus enabling the camera head enclosure to be adapted to an entirely different photo-electric pixel array and eliminating the need to custom make camera head enclosures for each application. One embodiment of the camera head enclosure apparatus disclosed further includes a plurality of carriers configured to hold a respective plurality of circuit boards associated with the particular photo-electric pixel array selected.

  • Patent number: 5240661
Abstract: A method for fabricating a composite swashplate ring utilizing a thermoplastic expandable mandrel which is rigid during braiding, yet softens after resin impregnation to allow expansion in a mold to increase fiber consolidation. Preferably, the mandrel accepts the incorporation of preformed structures prior to braiding with the braided mandrel suitable for incorporation in a resin transfer mold such that a dry fiber braided article having preformed structures may be impregnated with resin and consolidated to produce a net-shaped composite swashplate ring without machining.

  • Patent number: 4681724
Abstract: A shrinkable foam mandrel that can be easily removed and composite resin transfer molding process that uses the foam mandrel. The foam is dimensionally stable at a first temperature that typically corresponds to the cure temperature of the composite resin. The foam is capable of irreversibly shrinking to less than about 0.5 said foam's original size at a second tempertaure that is above said first tempertaure. The foam is encapsulated by a non-stick elastomer skin and covered with fibers. The fiber covered elastomer encapsulated foam is disposed in a female mold cavity and resin is injected into the female mold cavity. The resin and fibers are cured and the resulting composite component is removed from the female mold. The temperature is raised to the second temperature and the elastomer encapsulated foam male mandrel irreversibly shrink to less than about 0.5 its original size. Finally the shrunken male mandrel is removed from said composite component.
