    Abstract: The invention relates to the detection of target nucleic acids or nucleic acid units in a sample, by obtaining a SER(R)S spectrum for a SER(R)S-active complex containing, or derived directly from, the target. The complex includes at least a SER(R)S-active label, and optionally a target binding species containing a nucleic acid or nucleic acid unit. In this detection method, the concentration of the target present in the SER(R)S-active complex, or of the nucleic acid or unit contained in the target binding species in the SER(R)S-active complex, is no higher than 10.sup.-10 moles per liter. Additionally or alternatively, one or more of the following features may be used with the method: i) the introduction of a polyamine; ii) modification of the target, and/or of the nucleic acid or nucleic acid unit contained in the target binding species, in a manner that promotes or facilitates its chemi-sorption onto a SER(R)S-active surface; iii) inclusion of a chemi-sorptive functional group in the SER(R)S-active label.

    Abstract: An improved gas analyzer for measuring the presence of one or more gaseous compounds in a gas sample. The gas analyzer has an infrared source stabilized against temperature variations by a radiation loading scheme in combination with a selected source environmental temperature sensitivity to provide a stable source temperature without a conventional temperature controller. A rotating interference filter assembly is disposed in the optical path. This assembly alternately totally blocks radiation, passes radiation in a wave length band which will not be absorbed by a random gas sample, and sequentially passes radiation in one or more additional bands which will be absorbed by one or more gases in the sample cell. The sample cell features a unique enclosed cell with infrared transparent windows which are substantially free of impingement of contaminants of the gas sample thereon. A unique detector provides protection against deterioration from moisture while allowing easy and inexpensive assembly.

    Abstract: The base section of a burial casket supports an internal latch mechanism which is effective to engage keepers projecting downwardly from a pivotally supported cover section and to draw the cover section firmly against a resilient gasket member disposed between the base and cover sections. The gasket member is molded as a one-piece rectangular frame and includes parallel spaced peripherally extending sealing portions, the inner portion having an inverted U-shaped wall configuration and the outer portion having generally a V-shaped wall configuration. The latch mechanism includes a rotary actuator having an externally threaded coupling portion projecting to a circular opening within the front wall of the base section. A resilient sealing ring or grommet is mounted within the opening, and a cap-like closure member includes a tubular coupling portion which projects through the opening and threadably engages the coupling portion of the rotary actuator.
