Abstract: A method of cognitive training includes presenting cognitive training exercises as an integral part of the gameplay of a first person shooter (“FPS”). The cognitive training exercises can include mental set switching (“MSS”) exercises, updating exercises (e.g., dual n-back tests), and inhibiting exercises (e.g., sustained focus tasks). Adaptive motivation techniques—that is, the user-specific delivery of motivating elements—can also be employed to motivate a user to initiate and continue cognitive training.
