    Abstract: A process for forming an abrasion-resistant antistatic layer for an imaging element comprises: adjusting the pH of an aqueous composition of an electronically-conductive polymer to a pH of about 3 to about 10, and combining the pH-adjusted aqueous composition of the electronically-conductive polymer with an aqueous composition at a pH greater than 7 of a polyurethane film-forming binder having a tensile elongation to break of at least 50% and a Young's modulus measured at 2% elongation of at least 50000 psi. The process further comprises applying the resulting coating composition to the imaging element, thereby forming an abrasion-resistant antistatic layer on the element. The antistatic layer coating composition of the present invention can be applied to a wide variety of imaging elements, including, for example, photographic, electrostatographic, photothermographic, migration, electrothermographic, dielectric recording and thermal-dye-transfer imaging elements.

    Abstract: The present invention is an imaging element having, a support, an image-forming layer superposed on the support and an outermost scratch resistant antistatic layer superposed on the support. The outermost scratch resistant antistatic layer has a thickness between 0.6 and 10 microns. The scratch resistant layer is composed of a polymer having a modulus greater than 100 MPa measured at 20° C. and a tensile elongation to break greater than 50%, a filler particle having a modulus greater than 10 GPa, and an electrically conducting polymer. The volume ratio of the polymer to the filler particle is between 70:30 and 40:60 and the electrically conducting polymer is present at a weight concentration based on a total dried weight of the scratch resistant layer of between 1 and 10 weight percent.

    Abstract: The present invention is a photographic element including a support with a polyolefin resin layer, which is preferably polypropylene, on each surface of the support. The photographic element includes a print or backmark retaining and spliceable antistatic layer having a dry coverage of from 10 mg/m2 to 10,000 mg/m2 on one of the free surfaces of the polyolefin layers. An imaging layer may be superimposed on the other free surface of the polyolefin layers. The antistatic layer includes a (i) conductive agent, preferably a combination of an alkali metal salt and a polymerized alkylene oxide, (ii) colloidal silica, preferably aluminum modified colloidal silica and (iii) a polymeric film-forming binder with a peel strength of 200 g or above on a polypropylene surface on which the antistatic layer of the present invention is to be formed.

The antistatic layer includes a (i) conductive agent, preferably a combination of an alkali metal salt and a polymerized alkylene oxide, (ii) a positively charged colloidal oxide sol and (iii) a film forming binder which is an interpolymer of a primary amine addition salt with a peel strength of 200 g or above on the polyolefin surface on which the antistatic layer of the present invention is to be formed. The antistatic layer is expected to provide surface electrical resistivity of less than 12 log .OMEGA.
