    Abstract: A cleaning system for retaining a cleaning member such as a sponge or mop-head in a compressed and compacted state prior to use. The cleaning system generally includes one or more cleaning cartridges, each of which include a base, a cleaning member secured to the base, and an outer covering compressing the cleaning member. Upon removal of the outer covering, the cleaning member will expand and be ready for use. Also disclosed is a dispensing unit adapted to store, activate, use and dispose of the cleaning cartridges. The dispensing unit includes a nozzle which retains the outermost cleaning cartridge in a position partially extending through an outlet opening awaiting use. The dispensing unit may include a telescoping handle so that it may be converted for use as a mop.
