    Abstract: Disclosed is the use of a Raney cobalt catalyst in the hydrogenation process for the production of n-butanol.A process for the production of purified n-butanol comprising contacting in a hydrogenation zone n-butyraldehyde and hydrogen with an active porous cobalt catalyst under hydrogenation conditions of temperature and pressure for the production of alcohols from aldehydes, either in the substantial absence of water, or in the presence of water in an amount up to about 6 wt % based on the weight of the liquid hydrogenation reaction product to produce said reaction product comprising n-butanol, and purifying said reaction product by fractional distillation in the presence of about 0.01 to about 6 wt % of water, based on the total weight of feed to the fractionating column.

    Abstract: This invention pertains to a method of purifying ibuprofen-comprising reaction product mixtures. The method of purification is based on crystallization of ibuprofen from a hydrocarbon solvent and the discovery that there are impurity complexes in the ibuprofen-comprising reaction product mixtures which cannot be removed by crystallization from a hydrocarbon solvent.The method of the invention includes at least one step in which the impurity complex in a first ibuprofen-comprising mixture is destabilized or broken up, followed by crystallization of the ibuprofen from a second solution or mixture comprising the first ibuprofen-comprising mixture, whereby the impurities which were previously complexed can then be removed from the ibuprofen by the crystallization of ibuprofen from a solvent.

    Abstract: A method is provided for the production of 1-(4'-isobutylphenyl)ethanol (IBPE) comprising hydrogenating 4-isobutylacetophenone (IBAP) in the absence of a solvent using as a catalyst a treated activated sponge nickel catalyst, e.g., Raney nickel, obtained by subjecting such a catalyst wetted with a protective liquid composed preponderantly of water to a washing treatment with an organic washing liquid in which the aqueous protective liquid is substantially soluble and which is substantially soluble in IBAP or IBPE, e.g., a lower alkanol such as methanol, ethanol or isopropanol. The catalyst optionally may also be washed with IBAP or IBPE after the wash with the organic washing liquid and before being used in the hydrogenation reaction. The washing treatment results in substantially higher conversions IBAP and increased yields of IBPE with a practical reaction time.
