  • Patent number: 8441756
Abstract: A method and system for fabricating a magnetic transducer are described. The magnetic transducer includes a pole and a nonmagnetic intermediate layer adjacent to the pole. The pole has a paddle and a pole tip including a plurality of sidewalls. The pole includes a first magnetic pole layer, at least one antiferromagnetic coupling (AFC) structure on the first magnetic pole layer, and a second magnetic pole layer on the AFC structure(s). At least a portion of the first magnetic pole layer resides on the sidewalls of the pole tip. The paddle has a paddle width in a track width direction. The pole tip has a pole tip width in a track width direction that is less than the paddle width.

  • Patent number: 8279562
Abstract: A pole tip shield for a write element of a recording head is disclosed. The pole tip shield is spaced from the pole tip in the leading edge direction to provide a magnetic wall angle to reduce ATI or adjacent track erasure to compensate for the skew angle of the head. In illustrated embodiments, the pole tip shield includes side portions. In illustrated embodiments the pole tip shield is generally ā€œUā€ shaped and side portions of the pole tip shield include different thickness or width dimensions. In illustrated embodiments, the pole tip shield provides a magnetic wall angle for a rectangular shaped pole tip. Embodiments disclosed in the application include a trailing edge shield separated from the pole tip shield along an air bearing surface of the head by a non-magnetic gap portion.

  • Patent number: 6801409
Abstract: A read head shield having improved stability includes a ferromagnetic (FM) layer and an anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) layer adjacent the FM layer. The FM layer has a patterned shape and a domain configuration that is defined by a plurality of local magnetic domains that are stabilized in accordance with the patterned shape. The AFM layer is annealed to imprint thereon the stabilized local magnetic domains of the FM layer. The AFM layer operates to increase the stability of the domain configuration of the FM layer thereby providing improved resistance to domain configuration shift caused by the application of a strong magnetic field.
