  • Publication number: 20050260490
Abstract: An adhesive-treated porous separator and a method of adhering an electrode to the adhesive-treated separator without substantially occluding the pores of the separator. The adhesive-treated separator membrane comprises a porous separator having an anode side and a cathode side, a first adhesive formulation coated on the anode side, and a second adhesive formulation coated on the cathode side. The first and second adhesive formulations each include an adhesive component, a solvent, and an occlusion prevention component.

  • Publication number: 20050044918
Abstract: Apparatus and method for folding a sheet material, preferably an electrode sheet, into a fan-fold orientation. A securement means secures a portion of the sheet material to a rotatable plate in a plane parallel to the rotatable plate. A rotatable releasable clamp secures at least a portion of the sheet in a first rotational position between the plate and clamp. A rotation means rotates the securement means, plate, and clamp so as to move the sheet from the first rotational position to a second rotational position, wherein, rotation from the first rotational position to the second rotational position forms a folded portion of the sheet over a portion of the clamp.

  • Publication number: 20050019652
Abstract: An electrode assembly divided into a plurality of segments which are each separated by a fold, to, in turn, facilitate a fan-fold orientation. The assembly comprises a separator, an anode active material, a cathode active material, an anode current collector and a cathode current collector. Portions of the separator corresponding to at least one of the folds are substantially free of at least one of anode active material and cathode active material resulting in a gap between the respective side of the separator and the respective current collector. Additionally, the upper edge of one of the anode side and the cathode side of the separator and the lower edge of one of the anode side and the cathode side of the separator are substantially free of the respective anode or cathode active material and the respective anode or cathode current collector.

  • Patent number: 4690840
Abstract: The disclosure describes a method for the preparation of metallic alloys containing an alkali or alkali-earth metal, such as lithium, and a host metal, such as aluminum. Initially, an active organic solution of the alkali or the alkali-earth metal is prepared, and a source of the alkali or alkali-earth metal which are both brought together with one another. On the other hand, a metallic structure containing the host metal is prepared, the metallic structure is brought together with the organic solution which is kept in touch with the source of metal until there is formed an alloy of the host metal and of the alkali or alkali-earth metal with the metallic structure, and the alloy possesses an activity which is determined by that of the organic solution. The organic solution then acts as transfer agent of the alkali or alkali-earth metal towards the host metallic structure. To prepare a negative electrode, the alloy is brought together with an electrolyte, such as a thin polymeric film.
