Patent number: 8553429Abstract: An electrical component mounting assembly is disclosed for attaching a cylindrical electrical component (C1) such as capacitor, diode, or resistor to a mounting member such as a printed circuit board in a horizontal or vertical orientation. The mounting assembly can have a housing (12) and a sleeve (14) placed around the electrical component which cooperates with the housing to retain the electrical component to the housing. A substantially inner cylindrical wall (32) of the housing can taper inward from an entrance (34) end to a rear wall (18) to form a tapering or narrowing chamber (30). The sleeve can have a slit that runs along the entire length of the sleeve and a tapered outer surface (28) that cooperates with the tapered chamber to clamp or compress against the electrical component as the sleeve is inserted into the housing. The lack of appreciable expansion of the housing creates a tight friction fit to secure the sleeve to the housing.Type: GrantFiled: September 24, 2008Date of Patent: October 8, 2013Assignee: Molex IncorporatedInventors: Niall McNamara, Brendan Maguire, Denis O'Sullivan, SeanGearoid McMahon, Colm Reidy, Michael Crampton

Patent number: 6157164Abstract: The present invention relates to battery power system configurations, particularly systems using VRLA batteries in uncontrolled environments wherein the batteries are isolated from the rectifier when the batteries are in the float mode but on line during charge and discharge. The battery power system configuration of the present invention eliminates thermal runaway because the current drawn by each battery is limited to the value determined by a constant current source. A shorted battery cell may be easily detected by observing if the voltage of the battery is lower than a specified and expected value. In addition, battery capacity is maintained by the boost provided periodically from the current source. Finally, batteries are protected against receiving excessive current and since the currents sent through the batteries match the needs of these particular batteries, the life of the batteries is increased.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1999Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: Telcordia Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Robert K. Jaworski, Robert J. Kakalec, Thomas H. Kimsey, Keku M. Mistry, Thomas Denis O'Sullivan

Patent number: 5164098Abstract: Metal casting apparatus comprises a casting container having an outlet nozzle in the bottom wall thereof, and an upright stopper within the container having a lower nose end thereto, the stopper being selectively movable between an operative position in which the nose end thereof seats on, to close, the nozzle and an inoperative position in which said nose end is displaced from, to open, the nozzle. The apparatus further comprises a barrier member positioned between the nose end of the stopper and the outlet nozzle and of a refractory material such as ceramic fibre capable of withstanding temperatures associated with pre- and post-heating of the apparatus but which is combustible at temperatures associates with molten metal, the material of the barrier member also being deformable whereby, with the stopper in its operative position, the barrier member conforms with the shape of the nozzle and the nose end of the stopper.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1990Date of Patent: November 17, 1992Inventors: Charles D. Brown, Denis O'Sullivan

Patent number: 4673095Abstract: A closure device for screw-threaded cylindrical container openings comprises inner and outer closure members having a first drive arrangement therebetween for turning the device clockwise to mount same to close the opening. A second drive arrangement comprises a hexagonal projection and a hexagonal orifice on the members which engage on application of axial pressure to the device to permit, on applying an anti-clockwise torque, unscrewing of the device from the opening. The orifice may be initially closed by a cover secured to the boundary by the orifice by frangible connectors which are fractured by the projection on initial axial pressure being applied. This provides a tamper evident feature. In other embodiments, a cover has a manually graspable tab for tearing it from the opening before axial pressure is applied.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1985Date of Patent: June 16, 1987Inventors: Peter J. Puresevic, Julian D. Taylor, Denis O'Sullivan

Patent number: 4032697Abstract: A process is described for making alkaline batteries in which particular attention is given to the pretreatment of nickel plaques prior to impregnation. This pretreatment involves production of a uniform thin oxide film on the nickel plaque surface under carefully controlled conditions. This pretreatment prevents corrosion under conditions for commercial production of electrodes for alkaline batteries and permits not only higher loadings but more uniform loadings of the electrodes.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1975Date of Patent: June 28, 1977Assignee: Bell Telephone Laboratories, IncorporatedInventors: Richard Lawrence Beauchamp, Dean William Maurer, Thomas Denis O'Sullivan

Patent number: 3966494Abstract: A process is described for making nickel cadmium batteries in which the cadmium electrodes for these batteries are electrolytically impregnated under special conditions and employ a particular electrolytic solution. The electrolytic solution contains not only a soluble form of the cation of the active ingredient for the electrode and nitrate ions, but also certain other ions such as chloride, iodide and sulfate ions which increase the rates of impregnation and also increase the electrode loadings. In addition to obtaining more rapid and greater electrode impregnation, the present process improvements facilitate use of a continuous impregnation procedure.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 1974Date of Patent: June 29, 1976Assignee: Bell Telephone Laboratories, IncorporatedInventor: Thomas Denis O'Sullivan
