  • Patent number: 4479913
Abstract: A method and composition for joining adjacent carbon blocks in a high temperature environment including ramming a mix of calcined anthracite, resin, and a monomeric furfuryl alcohol in between the carbon blocks, curing and carbonizing.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 18, 1983
Date of Patent: October 30, 1984
    Assignee: QO Chemicals, Inc.
Inventors: Denis W. Akerberg, Carl A. Rude
  • Patent number: 4478269
Abstract: A method and composition for forming a dry free-flowing particulate solid is disclosed which utilizes a novel binder system for bonding particles of carbon, sand and/or other solid aggregate materials. The solid, non-sticky binder system comprises furfural, a phenolic novolak resin, and a liquid amine having free hydrogens on the amine nitrogen which is capable of reacting with furfural. This system is capable of adhering to such particles while retaining the free-flowing characteristics of the particles. The method involves mixing the aggregate with the furfural-phenolic novolak resin until tacky, and adding methylene chloride to the tacky mix while continuing to mix. The mix is cooled by the rapid evaporation of the methylene chloride and quickly forms the free-flowing characteristics of a powder or granulated material.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 16, 1982
Date of Patent: October 23, 1984
    Assignee: QO Chemicals, Inc.
    Inventor: Denis W. Akerberg
  • Patent number: 4439348
Abstract: A catalytic system for furan resin is disclosed, comprising mixtures of a sulfonic acid with urea salts of the respective sulfonic acid. By varying the acid:salt ratio of the catalytic system, the working time of the furan resin may be controlled as desired.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 5, 1982
Date of Patent: March 27, 1984
    Assignee: The Quaker Oats Company
    Inventor: Denis W. Akerberg
  • Patent number: 4430459
Abstract: A method and composition for forming a dry free-flowing particulate solid is disclosed which utilizes a novel binder system for bonding particles of carbon, sand and/or other solid particulate materials. The solid, non-sticky binder system comprises furfural, solid resin, (such as a phenolic resin), which is not sticky at room temperature and is soluble in furfural, and a liquid amine having free hydrogens on the amine nitrogen which amine is capable of reacting with furfural. This system is capable of adhering to such particles while retaining the free-flowing characteristics of the particles. The free-flowing particulate solid thus formed may be shaped, extruded or compression molded as necessary to form the desired article. A shaped mass of this particulate material is converted to an integral mass by warming or compressing. While the binder is curable at room temperature over a long period of time, the cure rate may be accelerated by increases in temperature.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 5, 1982
Date of Patent: February 7, 1984
    Assignee: The Quaker Oats Company
Inventors: Denis W. Akerberg, George W. Huffman, Carl A. Rude
  • Patent number: 4391946
Abstract: A furan polymer concrete is described comprising aggregate, acid catalyst and binder which includes furfuryl alcohol and a crosslinking monomer. The binder has a low viscosity, thereby allowing significantly less binder to be used in forming the polymer concrete.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 18, 1981
Date of Patent: July 5, 1983
    Assignee: The Quaker Oats Company
Inventors: Denis W. Akerberg, David D. Watson
  • Patent number: 4367247
Abstract: A primer composition for portland cement concrete comprising the reaction product of polyphosphoric acid and an alcohol.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 17, 1981
Date of Patent: January 4, 1983
    Assignee: The Quaker Oats Company
