Patent number: 7681657Abstract: A debris guard is provided for an assembly having a variable length cylinder coupled to a housing. The cylinder has a barrel pivotally coupled to the housing and a rod which extends and retracts with respect to The barrel. The debris guard includes a body of flexible material filling a space between the barrel and the wall of the housing and preventing debris from entering the space. The body compresses as the barrel moves toward the housing wall and expands as the barrel moves away from the housing wall. The body of flexible material is bonded to a surface of the barrel and to the wall of the housing. The flexible material is molded and comprises a closed cell elastomeric material.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 2004Date of Patent: March 23, 2010Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Kendall Lee Giesmann, Robert Lee Wood, Jr., Dennis Aaron Bowman

Patent number: 7481287Abstract: A vehicle cooling package has a fan shroud mounted to a heat exchanger assembly. A diverter plate is mounted adjacent to the shroud and spaced therefrom with a fan interposed therebetween. A diverting surface of the shroud and the diverter plate are angled from the axis of the fan when the shroud and plate are assembled to the vehicle. A vehicle hood has upper and side surfaces each having air discharge apertures corresponding with the space between the diverting surface and the diverter plate when the hood is closed. The diverting surface and the diverter plate both extend fully to the hood assembly when the hood is closed. The angles of the diverting surface and the diverter plate closely match a natural discharge angle of the fan, so that air is discharged from the fan at a high velocity from under the hood through the air discharge apertures.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2004Date of Patent: January 27, 2009Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Ricky Dean Madson, Andy Blaine Appleton, Clinton Lane Lafferty, Ronnie Franklin Burk, Dennis Aaron Bowman, Thomas Frederick Tock, Paul Thomas Bruss, Charles Nicholas Warren, Scott Keith Farlow, Matthew Robert Oliver

Patent number: 7165514Abstract: A variable fan drive for a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine is provided. A drive side assembly utilizes a hydraulic actuator to actuate a variable sheave assembly. The variable sheave assembly drives a sheave assembly of a driven side assembly by way of a v-belt. The hydraulic actuator has a piston coupled to the variable sheave assembly. The piston is hydraulically translated by pressurized engine oil from the internal combustion engine. An electronically controlled solenoid valve controlled by an engine or vehicle controller selectively controls the flow of engine oil for piston actuation. Thus the speed of the fan can be controlled based on various engine or vehicle operating parameters.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2004Date of Patent: January 23, 2007Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Dennis Aaron Bowman, Eric Albert Keen, Andy Blaine Appleton

Patent number: 6915873Abstract: A suspended drive axle and agricultural tractor having same including a central housing having inboard final drives and left and right axle housing suspended therefrom by upper and lower control arms with axle shafts extending outwardly therefrom to which wheel and tire assemblies are mounted. A constant velocity universal joint is provided between the inboard final drives and the axle shafts. The universal joint having a pair of journal members and a coupling yoke that radially surround the drive and driven yokes of the joint whereby the axial length of the universal joint is minimized to enable the wheels to be located on the axle shafts at 60 inch tread spacing. This allows the drive axle to be used on a row crop tractor without altering the structure of the vehicle from a conventional row crop tractor whereby the characteristics of a row crop tractor are maintained.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 2003Date of Patent: July 12, 2005Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Terrill Wayne Woods, Dennis Aaron Bowman, Mervin Peter Kizlyk, Norman Frederick Lemmon, Kendall Lee Giesmann, Aaron James Peterson, George Nick Schmitz, Peter Alan Kosmicki, Joe L. Patent number: 6609765Abstract: An adjustable wheel and axle assembly has a two piece inner element with inner and outer tapered portions. A wheel hub having a two-tiered tapered interior bore with one tapered portion engaging the inner element while the other tapered portion is radially space outward. A split ring wedge fits between the inner element and the wheel hub and is drawn in by a plurality of bolts extending through the wheel hub to clamp the inner element onto the axle. The taper angle is in the range of 14-16 degrees so that the parts are self releasing. A pinion gear with an integral shaft extending outward is used to move the wheel along the axle for adjusting the wheel position.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2001Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Gregory Dean Radke, Dennis Aaron Bowman

Patent number: 6520277Abstract: A steering cylinder for a tractor with internal, adjustable steering stops that do not occupy packaging space beyond the cylinder itself. End caps of the cylinder, between the piston rod and the cylinder, serve as the stops. The end caps are threadably mounted in the cylinder to enable adjustment. The stops can be rotated relative to the cylinder to thread the stops in or out, thereby changing the stroke of the steering cylinder. Once the stops are set to the desired location, they are held in place by a retainer that is bolted to the cylinder. The retainers can be selectively removed from the cylinder and then used as a wrench to rotate the stops to adjust the cylinder stroke. Adjustment is needed when different wheel and tire combinations are mounted on the tractor or when the tread width is changed. A travel limiter is mounted to the cylinder to prevent complete withdrawal of the stops and the resulting loss of hydraulic oil.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2000Date of Patent: February 18, 2003Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Dennis Aaron Bowman, James Albert Niebergall

Patent number: 6470991Abstract: A tractor with a front wheel suspension and mechanical front wheel drive wherein the front wheel drive differential case includes an engine oil sump replacing the need for a separate engine oil sump and wherein the suspension control arms are mounted to the differential case through integrally formed mounting structures in the differential case. These mounting. structures reduce the number of front end components thereby improving the packaging of the suspension, steering and front wheel drive. The elimination of the oil: pan allows the front axle ground clearance to be increased while improving ground visibility in front of the tractor over the hood.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2000Date of Patent: October 29, 2002Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Dennis Aaron Bowman, Christopher Alan Schafer, Dennis Lee Jeffries, Jeffery Kahle Brown

Patent number: 6402169Abstract: A steering knuckle and ball joint assembly for a tractor is provided in which the ball stud has a spherical ball portion and a pair of studs extending oppositely therefrom for attachment to the steering knuckle. The double studded ball stud enables the overall size of the ball studs to be reduced compared to a ball stud having a single stud and still accommodate the loads applied to the ball joint by the dual front wheels. Ball joints are used for both steering tie rods and suspension control arms. The steering knuckle is pan shaped to surround the ball joints on all but the interior side of the knuckle where the steering and suspension arms are connected. This shielding of the ball joints protect the ball joints from dirt and debris, especially from the mud and dirt thrown by the front tires.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2000Date of Patent: June 11, 2002Assignee: Deere & CompanyInventors: Christopher Alan Schafer, Dennis Aaron Bowman
