  • Patent number: 5301465
Abstract: A planter grid wall is formed by intersecting groups of metal strips, joined together and spaced apart to form a network of open cells. The strips have equal dimensions, with inner edges defining the open ended chamber of the planter, and outer edges defining the planter periphery. The distances between the inner and outer edges is at least one half the size of the cells to facilitate retention of growing medium within the planter. Yet the open cells permit the process steps of aeration of the planting medium and "air pruning" of roots that grow into the cells and out into contact with the surrounding ambient atmosphere. The inner edges also include abrupt sharp corners that engage and mechanically prune the roots, thereby avoiding spiral root growth and encouraging growth of short new root ends. A reflective, insulative coating on the strips aid heating of the plant medium by reflection and prevent conductive and convective heat loss through the strips at night time or in cold conditions.

  • Patent number: 4793324
Abstract: An apparatus and method for cooking food, particularly semi-liquid foods and baking doughs. The apparatus comprises an open metallic grid containing vertical cells, the grid being located at the bottom of a covered cooking vessel and being partially immersed in liquid, such as water. The cooking method involves placement of food within a container on the upper surface of the grid and application of heat to the bottom wall. A method for both mixing baking doughs and cooking them directly on the grid while contained within a flexible plastic bag is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4753219
Abstract: A reflective heat conductor is presented in the form of a grill having a plurality of individual cells bounded by reflective bare metal surfaces. The grill has an arcuate shape complementary to the object, such as a stovepipe, on which it is located. Heat transfer is effected by substantially increasing the conductive area of the surface of the object on which it is mounted, by reflecting radiant heat energy emitted by the surface, and, in the case of a stovepipe, by also increasing turbulence within the stovepipe to reduce stack velocity and produce more complete burning.

  • Patent number: 4527538
Abstract: A self-contained oven using an intense source of radiant heat applied directly onto the bottom surface of a heat transfer grill that can directly support food or objects being heated. The grill includes a lower section having downwardly open hollow cells formed by intersecting metal walls, a solid metal plate capping the lower section, and a covering insulating section that can support the food or objects. A natural draft is permitted to flow through the oven chamber from an inlet leading to the area directly beneath the heat transfer grill. Warmed air and gas then flows in a convoluted path through the oven in convection currents to transfer heat to the food or objects.
