Patent number: 6702463Abstract: A compliant foil fluid thrust bearing has a single sided or two sided thrust disk rotor, an integrally formed compliant foil member, and an underspring member. The non-rotating but compliant foils are located adjacent to the thrust face or faces or the rotatable disk and are formed as arcuate segments on washer-shaped disk members. The underspring member consists of three washer-shaped disk elements that together provide variable spring stiffness in both the circumferential and radial directions.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2000Date of Patent: March 9, 2004Assignee: Capstone Turbine CorporationInventors: Theodore S. Brockett, Murali Chinta, Dennis H. Weissert

Patent number: 6468051Abstract: A helical flow compressor used to supply gaseous fuel to a turbogenerator is equipped with an inlet throttling valve. The inlet throttling valve maintains the outlet pressure of the compressor at a preselected value.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2001Date of Patent: October 22, 2002Inventors: Steven W. Lampe, Matthew J. Stewart, Dennis H. Weissert

Publication number: 20020054718Abstract: A bidirectional radial bearing for rotatably supporting a rotor or shaft may include a bushing with an interior bore having one or more antirotation retainers that may be equally spaced and extend the axial length of the interior bore. The interior bore of the bushing may be formed into a plurality of lobes. The interface of adjacent lobes and a compliant foil and a foil underspring form symmetrical converging wedges. The combination of the lobed bore and the compliant foil and foil underspring establish symmetrical converging wedges surrounding the rotor or shaft. In another aspect of the present invention, a single compliant foil may combine with the lobed bore and one or more foil undersprings to form two or more symmetrical converging wedges. It is emphasized that this abstract is provided to comply with the rules requiring an abstract which will allow a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the technical disclosure.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 5, 2001Publication date: May 9, 2002Inventor: Dennis H. Patent number: 6190048Abstract: A compliant foil fluid film radial bearing having a contoured profile bearing rotor to provide for the greater thermal expansion of the hot end of the compliant foil fluid film radial bearing at operating temperature. The rotor may have a uniform taper over its entire length, may be tapered for a portion of its length, or the taper may vary over the entire length of the bearing rotor.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 1998Date of Patent: February 20, 2001Assignee: Capstone Turbine CorporationInventor: Dennis H. Weissert

Patent number: 6158892Abstract: A compliant foil fluid film bearing having individual fluid film foils formed as arcuate segments by an inner circumferential slot, an outer circumferential slot and a transverse therebetween. The transverse slot may be radial, slightly displaced from radial or tapered with one radial edge.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1999Date of Patent: December 12, 2000Assignee: Capstone Turbine CorporationInventors: Matthew J. Stewart, Dennis H. Weissert, Theodore S. Brockett

Patent number: 6094799Abstract: A compound shalt coupling having a flexible disk shaft, with two flexible disks or diaphragms, and a tie bolt shaft connecting two rigid or stiff shafts. One flexible disk diaphragm of the flexible disk shaft is coupled with an interference fit to the first stiff shaft, while the other flexible disk diaphragm of the flexible disk shaft is coupled with an interference fit to the tie bolt shaft which removably mounts the second stiff shaft. A quill shaft connects the two flexible disk diaphragms of the flexible disk shaft. The first stiff shaft can be a hollow sleeve with a magnet mounted therein and the second stiff shaft or power head shaft may include a compressor wheel, a bearing rotor, and a turbine wheel removably mounted on the tie bolt shaft.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1998Date of Patent: August 1, 2000Assignee: Capstone Turbine CorporationInventors: Matthew J. Stewart, Kenneth G. Roberts, Dennis H. Weissert, Robert W. Bosley
