  • Patent number: 8926017
Abstract: A chair of the type commonly found in a home or office and having a stationary back, a pair of arms, and a rotatable seat cradle that is located between the arms. The seat cradle includes a lumbar portion lying against the stationary chair back to support the user's lower back and a seat cushion portion to support the user's pelvis. The lumbar portion and the seat cushion portion of the seat cradle are connected to one another so as to rotate together as a unit relative to the stationary back and the arms of the chair. By virtue of the foregoing, the hips and spine of the user will be continuously aligned whenever the user shifts his weight in the chair, whereby to maximize user comfort and improve user posture.

  • Patent number: 5725463
Abstract: An abdominal exercise device to assist in exercising all three abdominal muscles includes a platform which is placed on a flat supporting surface. A substantially U-shaped body cage is pivotally mounted on the platform and extends outwardly therefrom and includes a U-shaped neck and head support portion and a pair of platform connecting portions adjustable connected thereto. A padded cushion mounted on the support portion supports the head of the user. A pair of pivot members pivotally connect the body cage to the platform. Each pivot member includes a cylindrical portion for pivotally rotatably mounting the body cage to side walls of the platform, and a semispherical portion which connects to free ends of the body cage. A user reclines on the platform and grasps the body cage and performs a sit-up type of motion with the body cage ensuring a full range of motion in the proper plane of movement to maximally recruit the abdominal muscles.

  • Patent number: 5234395
Abstract: An adjustable resistance upper body exerciser includes a generally arcuate belt (2) encircling the waist of a user and having a generally flat, rigid posterior central portion 3 and flexible anterior portions (4, 4a) including buckling means (5). A flexible inelastic cord (7) having a length and left and right ends (8, 8a) passes through an elongated guide means (12) attached to the belt, slidably retaining a central portion of the length the cord and leaving the right and left ends of the cord extending in the anterior direction. A snubber (15) is attached to the rigid posterior portion of the belt, contacting the slidable cord and applying an adjustable friction load to the slidably retained cord. A pair of handles (18, 18a) are attached to left and right ends of the cord, whereby a user wearing the belt encircling the waist may alternately pull said left and right handles with a tension force generally proportional to the friction load applied to the cord by the snubber.

  • Patent number: 5217487
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus 100 of a type on which a person 190 receives back therapy. The apparatus 100 includes a frame 101 designed to rest upon a floor surface 109. A support member 102 is pivotally mounted to the frame 101 above the floor surface 109, and a pelvic belt 103 is secured relative to the support member 102. In operation, the pelvic belt 103 stabilizes the person's pelvis relative to the support member 102, and the support member supports some portion of the person's torso including the pelvis. The support member 102 pivots among several positions, including a mounting position suitable for mounting by a person, and a locking mechanism 104 secures the support member 102 in any of a plurality of back therapy positions.

  • Patent number: 4752067
Abstract: Apparatus for use in exercising the abdominal muscles, which improves the physiological effectiveness of the familiar sit-up exercise, is disclosed. The apparatus is comprised of a specially shaped basin which cradles the pelvis while at the same time the lumber spine is supported by a longitudinal support portion. The angulation between the pelvic basin and the lumber support portion is arched convexly superiorly to accommodate the anatomical transition between the sacrum and the lumber spine. A rocker portion thereby properly activates the several abdominal muscle groups during use. The rocker portion also cradles the user's tailbone suspending the boney structure and thereby reducing frictional and compressional forces thereon. Two handles to suit several arm lengths are on opposing sides of the pelvic basin, and are designed to assist proper posturing of the user on the device and to allow for use of upper extremity strength in assisting the user to perform the exercise.
