  • Patent number: 6921450
Abstract: A soft contact roll is mounted immediately downstream of the generator roll in a single facer to press the freshly glued single face web against the surface of the heated fluted bonding roll with a light load uniformly distributed across the full width of the web. The contact roll helps spread the adhesive more quickly and uniformly.

Date of Patent: July 26, 2005
    Assignee: Marquip, LLC
Inventors: Kevin S. Stein, Dennis L. Lemke
  • Patent number: 6623416
Abstract: A single facer for corrugated paperboard of the type using a very large diameter fluted bonding roll and a much smaller diameter fluted corrugating roll which engages the bonding roll to provide a corrugating nip. The small diameter corrugating roll is made to be resilient by utilizing a thin walled roll shell so that it is capable of inward deflection in the corrugating nip in order to cushion impact and absorb the deflection as the rolls interengage along the nip. This cushioning deflection absorbs vibrational movement due to chordal action of the interengaging flutes, and thereby reduces noise level and roll wear and improves the quality and consistency of corrugation. A modified flute profile, compensating for flute pitch variations between the large diameter bonding roll and small diameter corrugating roll, assures uniform flute-to-flute engagement in the corrugating nip.

  • Patent number: 6601282
Abstract: A glue machine for a corrugator single facer utilizes a system of simultaneously operated linear actuators to move the glue machine from an idle position adjacent the single facer to a locked position on the single facer, and then to a running position with the glue machine glue roll in a pre-established position with respect to a corrugating roll on the single facer. The glue machine is carried on laterally spaced pairs of front wheels and rear wheels mounted on pivot arms. The linear actuators are preferably air cylinders interconnecting front and rear wheel pivot arms to provide sequential glue machine frame movement from the idle to the locked position, followed by movement to the running position.

  • Patent number: 6350333
Abstract: A laminator for applying pre-printed labels to a single face corrugated web to form double face corrugated sheets utilizes a control system including accurate leading and trailing edge detection of the labels to custom cut the corrugated web to match the label length in a manner which assures complete and uniform coverage of the glued flute tips of the corrugated web by the labels. The labels are fed non-stop as a series of spaced sheets into a laminating nip to join the leading edge of the traveling single face corrugated web. A positioning nip upstream of the laminating nip varies the speed of the incoming sheets to accurately match sheet leading edge to web leading edge. Detection of the sheet trailing edge triggers operation of the web cut-off knife to accurately match the corresponding cut trailing edge.

  • Patent number: 6073527
Abstract: Shingling of paperboard sheets cut from a web with a helical blade cutoff knife utilizes the downward deflection of the trailing edge of the cut sheet and simultaneous lifting of the leading edge of the web to position the sheets for shingling immediately downstream of the knife. A vacuum outfeed conveyor takes advantage of the initial downward deflection of the sheet caused by cutting to pull the trailing edge of the sheet onto the vacuum conveyor which is simultaneously slowed relative to the lead edge of the advancing web. In the preferred embodiment, vacuum is continuously applied and the conveyor is accelerated back to line speed as soon as the leading end of the web is pulled onto the vacuum conveyor.
