  • Patent number: 6323306
Abstract: High molecular weight, water-soluble, cross-linked cationic polymers are prepared by reacting amine-functionalized cationic base polymers, in which the monomer units of the base polymer contain from about 0.05 to about 5.0% amine functionalized monomer units and from about 95 to about 99.95% additional monomer units, including cationic monomer units and optional non-cationic monomer units, with an amount of a cross-linking agent, reactive with the amines of the base polymer, providing between about 0.02 to about 3.0 equivalents of cross-linking agent reactive groups per each mole of amine. The polymers are useful as coagulants and as coatings.

  • Patent number: 5443698
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of synthesizing a metal carboxylate comprising:(a) placing an anode and a cathode in contact with an emulsion, wherein said anode includes a metal which, during electrolysis, reacts with a carboxylic acid to form a metal carboxylate, wherein the cathode comprises a material inert to the electrolytic reaction, and the emulsion comprises a carboxylic acid, an aqueous phase which includes an electrolyte, and an organic phase; and,(b) passing a current between the anode and cathode to effect an electrolytic reaction between the metal of the anode and the carboxylic acid to form the metal carboxylate.

  • Patent number: 4291244
Abstract: A process for preparing polymer electrets comprising the following steps:(a) providing two electrodes in a deposition zone, said electrodes being in a spaced relationship to one another, having opposing surfaces, and being connected to an external voltage source capable of impressing an intense electric field between the opposing surfaces;(b) providing a dipolar substituted p-xylylene monomer vapor in sufficient amount to coat the opposing surfaces of the electrodes;(c) activating the power source; and(d) introducing the vapor from step (b) into the deposition zone, said zone being under vacuum and at a temperature at which the vapor will condense, whereby the vapor condenses on the opposing surfaces of the electrodes, the monomer polymerizing to parylene, coating said surfaces, and forming electrets.

  • Patent number: 4163828
Abstract: A process for making an article comprising (a) a solid substrate and (b) a coating on said substrate, said coating comprising parylene admixed with (i) a sterically hindered phenol vaporizable at a temperature in the range of about 20.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. or (ii) pyrogallol,Said process comprising the following steps:(A) vaporizing a substituted or unsubstituted p-xylylene diradical and said phenol or pyrogallol; and(B) introducing the vapors from step (A) into a deposition zone containing the substrate, said zone being under vacuum and at a temperature at which the vapors will condense,Whereby the vapors condense on the substrate, the diradical polymerizing to parylene, coating the substrate and forming the article, and the defined article.
