  • Publication number: 20020133179
Abstract: An improved method for attaching soft tissue to bone by passing a suture through an opening in the bone, e.g., a transosseous tunnel, and affixing the soft tissue with the suture. The improvement, for preventing the suture from migrating through the bone at the end of the opening, includes placing a eyelet into an end of the bone opening and passing the suture through the eyelet, as well as through the opening in the bone, in order to affix the soft tissue to the bone with the suture.

  • Patent number: 6319252
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for attaching tissue to bone. Apparatus is disclosed for assembling tissue to bone comprising an expandable body configured to expand into bone, the expandable body defining a bore; and an expander pin comprising a shaft sized to be received in the bore of the expandable body and expand the expandable body laterally when the expander pin is driven into the expandable body, and tissue attachment apparatus associated with the shaft, the expander pin defining a bore; whereby when the expander pin is driven into the expandable body, the expandable will be attached to bone and the tissue attachment apparatus will secure tissue to the apparatus. A method is disclosed for attaching tissue to bone comprising driving an expandable body into a bone, the expandable body defining a bore and comprising tissue attachment apparatus; and fixing the expandable body in, and thereby securing the tissue to relative to, the bone.

  • Patent number: 5935129
Abstract: The invention provides anchoring devices and methods for coupling an object, such as a suture or soft tissue, to bone. In one aspect of the invention, a bone anchor is placed into compression fit with a predrilled bone hole by pulling an insertion stem at least partially into an anchoring element. In its non-expanded state, the anchoring element is slidably mounted on the proximal end of the insertion stem. The anchoring element has an axial channel at least a portion of which has an inner diameter (or cross-section) smaller than an outer diameter (or cross-section) of at least one portion of the insertion stem. As that larger portion of the insertion stem is pulled through the channel, it causes the walls of the anchoring element to expand outwardly and, thereby, to engage the bone hole walls in a pressure or compression fit.
