  • Patent number: 9427807
Abstract: A clamp for holding a cutting insert on a tool holder and having a coolant passage therethrough to receive a coolant from a coolant supply conduit external to the tool holder and into an inlet of the clamp, and to impinge a coolant stream emerging from an outlet of the coolant passage onto a cutting interface between the cutting insert and a work piece. The flow of coolant through the coolant passage extends the life of the cutting insert by reducing heat generation at the cutting interface between the cutting edge of the cutting insert and the work piece. The coolant passage can be formed using conventional drilling tools. The clamp enables the extension of the service life of a cutting insert and can be used with conventional tool holders.

  • Patent number: 6796751
Abstract: The ball nose end mill cutter according to the present invention includes a cutting face 12 providing a plurality of alternating crest 52 and root 54 profiles arranged with respect to each other to further provide a serrated cutting edge 16 on the cutter. The serrations and serrated cutting edge positioned on a cutter insert 10 for removable affixation to a tool body 20 having a centerline of rotation 28, and including an insert body 18 having a contact surface 30 for mating engagement with a mounting surface of the tool body. The ball nose end mill insert further including a curved cutting face surface 12, and a plurality of face serrations formed along the curved cutting face surface, the face serrations having face crests 116 and face roots 216 forming a serrated curved cutting edge 16.

  • Patent number: 6146064
Abstract: The cutting insert 10 for removing metal from a workpiece includes an insert body 12 having a left-side wall 24, right-side wall 26, a top surface 28 defining a notch 16, a bottom surface 30 and an end region 20 defining a front cutting edge 60. A land region 42 includes a front land portion 44, a left-side land portion 45, and a right-side land portion 46 which together define a periphery of a chip control pocket 40. The chip control pocket 40 includes a front descending wall 47 and a rear ascending wall 48, a left-side descending wall 50 and a right-side descending wall 52. Each of the walls of the chip control pocket preferably has a curvilinear configuration. A protuberance 54 is spaced between the left-side descending wall and the right-side descending wall, and has an elongate top surface 56 spaced along a protuberance axis 66 preferably perpendicular to the front cutting edge 60.

  • Patent number: 6102630
Abstract: The back surface of a tool insert (12) is provided with a series of axially extending serrations (25) that form a contact surface to mate with similar serrations formed on the mounting surface (23) of a tool mount (13). The tops of the serrations are truncated so that the tapered walls of each serration are in full engagement with the adjacent walls of the mating serration. A threaded fastener (15) secures the insert (12) to the tool mount (13). A projection (18a) on the mounting surface resists axial movement of the insert. The serrations (25) extend toward the base of the insert to prevent lateral displacement resulting from circumferentially applied forces acting on the curved cutting surfaces (12a, 12b, 12c) of the insert. The centering and restraining action of the serrations maintain the inserts in proper alignment even after the mounting surface serrations of the tool mount begin to exhibit wear.

  • Patent number: 5873684
Abstract: A milling tool 8 includes a tool holder 10 for housing multiple thread cutting inserts 24 for precise milling of threads on a workpiece. The tool holder 10 is rotatable in an orbitable path spaced radially from a milling axis and is simultaneously rotatable about its own axis for repeatedly bringing each of the cutting inserts into engagement with the workpiece. Each cutting insert is precisely positioned within the tool holder by a stop surface 62 located at an axially rearward end of an insert cavity 28 in the tool holder. An axially elongate tool holder groove 32 is provided in communication with a side face of the generally rectilinear insert cavity. Each cutting insert defines a substantially rectangular plate, an end face for mating engagement with the stop surface 62 and an axially elongate insert groove 26 extending from a corresponding side face on the rectangular plate.
