  • Patent number: 6535798
Abstract: A system including a component (e.g., a processor) with a clock and a thermal management controller that monitors a temperature in the system. The thermal management controller varies the component between different performance states (e.g., cycles the processor between a high and a low performance state) when an over-temperature condition is detected. The thermal management controller further throttles the clock of the component while in the low performance state until the over-temperature condition is removed.

  • Patent number: 6452610
Abstract: A method for displaying graphics in a computer system. In one embodiment, the method includes a step of receiving a stream of data into the main memory of the computer system. This stream of data comprises a series of descriptions of digital video frames and a series of indicators, each of which corresponds to a set, or a group of one or more, of the video frame descriptions. Each indicator indicates a basis for selecting a subset of the set of video frame descriptions. For example, in one embodiment thirty video frame descriptions are in each set, and a given indicator indicates that half of those thirty descriptions should be included in the corresponding subset. Then, only the fifteen video frame descriptions selected for inclusion in the subset are decompressed, and only the fifteen resulting video frames are displayed, while the other fifteen frames are dropped.

  • Patent number: 6140860
Abstract: An apparatus for use with a semiconductor substrate includes a digital interface, a digital-to-analog converter and a thermal sensor circuit. The digital interface stores a value that indicates a desired thermal threshold, and the digital-to-analog converter provides an analog signal that indicates the value. The thermal sensor circuit uses the analog signal to set the desired thermal threshold and indicate when a temperature of the substrate exceeds the thermal threshold.

  • Patent number: 5909696
Abstract: A novel method and apparatus to cache System Management Mode (SMM) data with other data to improve performance and reduce latency of SMM handler routines. This method and apparatus allows SMM data and non-SMM data to be distinguished in the cache without requiring extra cache bits which can add to the cost of implementation. Since SMM data and non-SMM data can coexist in the cache, there is no need for time consuming cache flush cycles when switching between the two modes. Since SMM data can be cached, performance of SMM routines are improved. This method and apparatus defines the SMRAM address range to be a range of addresses representable by the tag, but not directly corresponding to installed main memory. When accesses are made to SMRAM addresses, they are redirected to an unused portion of main memory. Protection mechanisms may be implemented to limit access to these SMRAM addresses when not in SMM.

  • Patent number: 5745375
Abstract: A power control circuit and corresponding technique for reducing power consumption by an electronic device and thereby increasing performance. The power control circuit comprises a controller, a clock generation circuit and a power supply circuit. The controller detects whether a condition exists to scale the voltage and frequency of the electronic device and in response, signals the clock generation circuit to perform frequency scaling on the electronic device and the power supply circuit to perform voltage scaling on the electronic device. The condition may include a situation where the temperature of the electronic device is detected to have exceeded a thermal band. The condition may also include a situation where the electronic device is detected to be idle for a selected percentage of its run time.

  • Patent number: 5680609
Abstract: A method and apparatus for synchronizing the deleting of files across similarly configured file-systems is described. The present invention is used in computer systems which have similarly configured file-systems and as such have similar files existing in the file-systems. The present invention includes a method of identifying files deleted in an originating computer or file-system and automatically propagating the deleted file entries to a receiving file-system where they are deleted.

  • Patent number: 5598565
Abstract: A flat panel display power management system for a flat panel display screen in a portable electronic device is disclosed. The flat panel display power management system is capable of controlling the amount of power delivered to each pixel on the flat panel display screen. The portable electronic device can select a subset of important pixels that will continue to receive more power than the remaining pixels if the flat panel display power management system enters a reduced power mode. When the electronic device system determines that the user has been inactive for a predetermined amount of time or if the user manually requests low power mode, the flat panel display power management system enters the reduced power mode. In the reduced power mode, the flat panel display power management system reduces the power provided to the pixels that are not within the subset of important pixels.
