Patent number: 6493363Abstract: A system for automated monitoring of pest insects having sensor units which include an insect electrocutor trap modified by the inclusion of electronic circuitry to sense, count and store the numbers of insects killed by it. The numbers of insects can be displayed at the electrocutor and/or transmitted to a remote computer that can acquire and time-stamp counts from thousands of distributed electrocutors for subsequent analysis and display. The data from the units is transmitted through a communications system which is organized into a two or more levels of multiplexing modules. Each multiplexing module has a plurality of inputs from next level multiplexing modules, with the exception of the last level multiplexing modules. The last level multiplexing modules have a plurality of inputs from sensor modules outputting data.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1998Date of Patent: December 10, 2002Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of AgriculturalInventors: Dennis Shuman, David K. Patent number: 5907559Abstract: A communications system is organized into a two or more levels of multiplexing modules. Each multiplexing module has a plurality of inputs from next level multiplexing modules, with the exception of the last level multiplexing modules. The last level multiplexing modules have a plurality of inputs from sensor modules outputting data. A default condition is set up to allow transmission of address information from the computer to all the multiplexing modules to allow the programming of each multiplexing module to select one of its inputs. At the appropriate time, timing circuitry in the multiplexing modules reverse the direction of communication of the multiplexing modules to allow a single sensor module to transmit its data to the computer, in accordance with the address information.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1995Date of Patent: May 25, 1999Assignees: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of Agriculture, University of FloridaInventors: Dennis Shuman, Aharon Dagan

Patent number: 5646404Abstract: An automated system has been developed that can acquire and remotely display data indicative of infestation levels in stored agricultural commodities. The system accurately records and time stamps each insect detection, across a full range of pertinent species' sizes, as they drop through a probe containing a sensor head.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1995Date of Patent: July 8, 1997Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of AgricultureInventors: Carl A. Litzkow, Dennis Shuman, Sergey Kruss, James A. Coffelt

Patent number: 5594654Abstract: An automated system has been developed to count and package beneficial insect larvae or eggs and includes a funnel-shaped container which sits in the top portion of a sensor head and a turntable with multiple containers located below the sensor head, for collecting larvae or eggs as they drop through the sensor head. The system accurately records the number and time stamps each insect larva or egg detection as they drop through a sensor head.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1995Date of Patent: January 14, 1997Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of AgricultureInventors: Dennis Shuman, Carl A. Litzkow, Sergey Kruss, James A. Coffelt, Frederick L. Petitt, David O. Wietlisbach

Patent number: 5473942Abstract: A device and a method for locating and counting insects in agricultural commodities has been developed. Acoustic sensors pick up sounds emanating from adult and or larval insects. The electrical outputs of the sensors are amplified and analyzed to determine (1) the first sensor to detect the sound, (2) the second sensor to detect the sound and (3) the time difference between the first and second detection. These determinations are used to calculate the locations and numbers of insects in the agricultural commodity samples.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1992Date of Patent: December 12, 1995Inventors: Kenneth W. Vick, Carl A. Litzkow, Dennis Shuman

Patent number: 4058659Abstract: Compounds of formula ##STR1## wherein X is --NR.sub.1 R.sub.2, --Cl, --Br or SR; Y is --X, --OH or --NH.sub.2 ; Z is hydrogen or --NH.sub.2 ; and R' is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 acyl; R being hydrogen, aryl, aralkyl, substituted aryl, substituted aralkyl, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 alkyl; and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 being independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, phenyl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.10 aralkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 branched chain alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 unsaturated alkyl or lower alkyl joined to form a 5 or 6-membered heterocyclic ring, with the proviso that when one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are hydrogen, the other is not. The compounds variously exhibit phosphodiesterase inhibition, protein kinase activation, positive inotropic effects, adenyl cyclase inhibition and other biological activities.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1975Date of Patent: November 15, 1977Assignee: ICN Pharmaceuticals, Inc.Inventors: Roland K. Patent number: 4038480Abstract: N.sup.6 -Carbamoyl and -carbonyl analogs of adenosine 3',5'-cyclic phosphate (cAMP) are prepared and variously demonstrated to exhibit kinase, adrenal steroidogenisis and lipolysis activation superior to cAMP, inhibit phosphodiesterase, and found to increase cardiac output or, in particular cases, to lower blood pressure.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1973Date of Patent: July 26, 1977Assignee: ICN Pharmaceuticals, Inc.Inventors: Roland K. Robins, Dennis A. Shuman, Kay H. Boswell

Patent number: 3948886Abstract: Described herein are novel 6-alkylthio and 6-arylalkylthio purine 3',5' cyclic nucleotides variously exhibiting adenyl cyclase and (in animal studies) tumor inhibitory properties, interferon potentiation, antiviral activity, and the ability to activate adenosine 3',5'-cyclic phosphate-dependent protein kinase while enjoying resistance to phosphodiesterase hydrolysis superior to that of its naturally occuring analog. The compounds are obtained by alkylation of the corresponding 6-thio nucleotide, which is in turn provided by a novel synthetic route.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1973Date of Patent: April 6, 1976Assignee: ICN Pharmaceuticals, Inc.Inventors: Dennis A. Patent number: 3936801Abstract: A digital timing circuit comprising integrated circuits is presented for multifrequency signal receivers in which a first counter is pulsed by a clock to generate predetermined timing intervals under the control of a second counter. The second counter sequentially recycles the first counter to make multiple use of the stages therein to provide various timing intervals, each associated with a timing function, e.g., initial state and signal persistence timing, fixed duration output pulse, signal check and delayed steering release. Multiple use of the first counter by the second counter provides efficient use of the first counter and reduces size and cost of the circuit.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1974Date of Patent: February 3, 1976Assignee: Bell Telephone Laboratories, IncorporatedInventor: Dennis Shuman
