  • Publication number: 20110292534
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a plurality of disk surfaces and a plurality of corresponding heads. The disk drive further comprises a preamp including a first integrated circuit coupled to a first plurality of the heads. The first integrated circuit comprises a first read-output for outputting a preamplified read signal, a first write-input for receiving a first write signal, a write-output-passthrough for outputting a passthrough write signal in response to the first write signal, and a read-input-passthrough for receiving a passthrough read signal. The preamp further comprises a second integrated circuit coupled to a second plurality of the heads, wherein the second integrated circuit comprises a second read-output for outputting the passthrough read signal, and a second write-input for receiving the passthrough write signal.

  • Publication number: 20110226729
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a flex circuit is disclosed for a disk drive comprising a disk, a head actuated radially over the disk, and control circuitry. The flex circuit is for electrically coupling the head to the control circuitry and comprises a substrate. An electrical coating applied to a first side of the substrate is etched to form a first electrical lead. The first side of the substrate is irradiated with radiation such that the first electrical lead masks the radiation from passing through the substrate to prevent curing of a photoresist applied to the second side of the substrate to form an uncured photoresist and a cured photoresist on the second side of the substrate. The uncured photoresist is removed from the second side of the substrate to form a groove, and the groove is filled with electrically conductive material to form the second electrical lead.

  • Patent number: 7804657
Abstract: A method is disclosed for setting an operating bias current for a magnetoresistive (MR) element. A bias current is applied to the MR element, and a voltage across the MR element is measured corresponding to the bias current. The bias current is then adjusted in response to the bias current multiplied by a ratio of a target voltage and the measured voltage. The adjusted bias current is then applied to the MR element. In one embodiment, the bias current is adjusted until the measured voltage substantially equals the target voltage.

  • Patent number: 7339268
Abstract: A semiconductor die mounted to a flex cable is provided. The flex cable comprises a heat sink layer and a flex cable substrate having conductive traces disposed thereon. The flex cable substrate includes an aperture aligned with the semiconductor die. A thermal conductor disposed within the aperture contacts both the semiconductor die and the heat sink layer. The thermal conductor can comprise, for example, a set of solder balls.

  • Patent number: 7092186
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed which demagnetizes the head after a write operation. Write circuitry applies a write signal to the head in order to write data to a selected data sector during a write operation, wherein the write signal comprises a predetermined write current amplitude. Control circuitry demagnetizes the head at the end of the write operation by maintaining the write current amplitude while increasing a frequency of an AC write signal applied to the head over a predetermined demagnetization interval, wherein increasing the frequency of the AC write signal decreases an amplitude of the AC write signal when observed at the head.

  • Patent number: 7046488
Abstract: A disk drive is disclosed comprising a disk and a head actuated over the disk. The head comprising a first head terminal and a second head terminal. The disk drive further comprises an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection circuit comprising a first depletion mode metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) comprising a gate terminal and a first and second transistor terminals. The first transistor terminal of the first depletion mode MOSFET is coupled to the first head terminal, and the second transistor terminal of the first depletion mode MOSFET is coupled to the second head terminal. The gate terminal is biased to turn on the first depletion mode MOSFET while the disk drive is powered down, thereby shorting the first and second head terminals to protect the head from ESD.

The disk drive further comprises an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection circuit comprising a first depletion mode metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) and a second depletion mode MOSFET.
