  • Publication number: 20090095259
Abstract: A method for operating fuel system that supplies fuel to a plurality of injectors in an internal combustion engine via a first pump and a second pump with a bypass circuit coupled between the first and second pump for returning fuel to a fuel tank, the pumps connected in series, is provided. The method includes before actuating fuel injectors during an engine start, operating the first pump, where fuel is driven through the bypass circuit that generates a fuel pressure that is delivered to the injectors that is greater than the fuel pressure delivered to the injectors during the moderate pressure mode of operation when the bypass regulator is maintaining a constant fuel line pressure. The method also includes during actuation of the fuel injectors after an engine start, operating the first and second pumps, where fuel pressure is regulated at a specified regulator pressure via bypass flow in the bypass.

  • Patent number: 7387111
Abstract: An in-tank fuel supply unit is provided for supplying fuel from a fuel tank to an engine. The fuel supply unit generally comprises a fuel delivery module and a jet pump assembly selectively attachable to the fuel delivery module. The fuel delivery module has a housing defining a reservoir and includes a fuel pump for pressurizing fuel in the reservoir. The jet pump assembly has a suction tube defining a suction chamber and a nozzle situated inside the suction chamber. The nozzle receives pressurized fuel from the fuel pump and sprays the fuel from a nozzle tip at high velocity to draw additional fuel into the suction chamber through an inlet formed in the suction tube.

  • Patent number: 7302938
Abstract: A mechanical returnless fuel system comprises a fuel pump having an output for supplying fuel to fuel injectors of an automotive engine. The fuel system includes a pressure regulating valve that returns a portion of the pump output in excess of engine fuel usage to the fuel supply. The pressure regulating valve results in a fuel pressure that varies as a function of engine fuel demand. During operation, a controller determines a projected engine fuel demand, then determines an estimated fuel pressure based upon the projected engine fuel demand. The controller utilizes the estimated fuel pressure to provide a more accurate calculation of the opening time for the fuel injectors and thereby improve engine control.

  • Patent number: 7267524
Abstract: A fuel pump is provided having improved efficiency by lowering the wet circle index of the pump while maintaining robust axial clearances to meet the demands of an automotive application. One embodiment includes a fuel pump for pressurizing fuel for delivery to an engine of a motor vehicle. The fuel pump generally comprises a housing, a motor, a single sided impeller, a cover and a body. The provision of a single sided impeller greatly reduces the wet circle index and improves the pump efficiency. The cover, impeller, and body are structured to axially balance the impeller which is free floating on the shaft of the motor.

  • Patent number: 7217084
Abstract: A rotary fuel pump employs pressure balancing features on the non-vaned side of the impeller to provide localized application of fluid forces so that the impeller is more precisely balanced within the pumping chamber. A generally disc-shaped impeller body has an impeller with a body-side surface and a cover-side surface. The cover-side surface defines an impeller flow channel extending circumferentially around the impeller. The impeller includes a plurality of vanes positioned at least partially within the impeller flow channel. The body-side surface has a plurality of discontinuous undercut regions each coaxially aligned with at least a portion of the impeller flow channel. The impeller has a plurality of apertures wherein each aperture connects the impeller flow channel with a respective undercut region, whereby pressure forces against the impeller from the fuel are substantially balanced in the axial direction.

  • Publication number: 20060180535
Abstract: An in-tank fuel supply unit self cleans the mesh filter of the primary fuel pump, thereby permitting smaller mesh sizes to decrease pump wear and increase the life of the pump. Generally, the in-tank fuel supply unit includes a reservoir, an auxiliary fuel pump, a primary fuel pump and a filter. Fuel exiting the auxiliary fuel pump outlet is directed towards the filter to wash debris from the filter. Preferably a swirling flow is generated within the reservoir, or the system in run in an overflow condition to assist in the self cleaning of the fuel filter.
