  • Patent number: 6736305
Abstract: The present invention relates to rotary friction welding and non-rotary motion friction welding, providing means for controlling ductilities of the components during the welding process so as to bias the welding process in favor of a first component or to match the ductilities of different components thereby facilitating the welding process.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 5, 2001
Date of Patent: May 18, 2004
    Assignee: Rolls-Royce plc
Inventors: Derek J Foster, Michael S Hodgson, Sandra J King

  • Patent number: 6121967
Abstract: Improved techniques for controlling multiple media bays (expansion bays) of a computer system are disclosed. Status information (and possibly one or more control operations) for devices in media bays of a computer system can be displayed, for example, to identify devices that occupy the media bays and to indicate the removability of those devices. Software locks discourage a user from improper removal of media bay devices in a multiple media bay computer system. The software locks work not only during hot removal of locked media bay devices but also removal of locked media devices during a sleep state of the computer system. Also, a centralized media bay data storage area can be provided as well as a media bay driver for each media bay to permits easy access to information pertaining to the one or more media bays of the computer system.

  • Patent number: 5949979
Abstract: A technique for dynamic addition or removal of buses to a computer system. The technique operates even though the computer system and its operating system are in use. As buses are added or removed from the operational computer system for each peripheral device added or removed, bus controller manipulators for each of the buses are registered with a system bus manager of the operating system. Thereafter, the operating system is able to communicate with the peripheral devices over the corresponding buses using the respective bus controller manipulators.

  • Patent number: 5556257
Abstract: A method of making an integrally bladed disc for a gas turbine engine, the disc having at least one blade the radially outermost surface of which is coated with a material harder than that of the blade, the method comprising the steps of: providing a forged disk blank of a first material; friction surfacing at least part of the circumference of the blank with a second material harder than the first material; and machining the blank so as to provide an integrally balded disc wherein the radially outermost surface of at least one blade is coated with said second material.

  • Patent number: 5412526
Abstract: The present invention provides a circuit for limiting voltage surges in load centers, panelboards and other electrical distribution devices. The circuit includes at least one high potential terminal adapted for connecting to at least one corresponding service line and a low potential terminal adapted for connecting to a low potential means. The circuit also includes a plurality of varistors connected in parallel to one another between each high potential terminal and the low potential terminal and a plurality of fuses corresponding in number to the plurality of varistors. Each fuse is connected in series to one of the varistors. Each fuse opens the circuit therethrough upon failure of the associated varistor. The circuit further includes monitoring the status condition of the fuses.

  • Patent number: 4768725
Abstract: An apparatus for winding a filament onto a former includes one or more filament supply bobbins mounted on an annular carrier for rotation about a first axis for receiving a plurality of windings of the filament, and a translation device for moving the former relative to the carrier along a path which passes through the carrier thereby enabling the filament to be wrapped around the former. A guide member guides the filament from a respective bobbin to the former, the guide member defining a radially outward facing cylindrical surface. The apparatus reduces bending of the filament as it is wound onto the former.
