Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of a phenolic resole and a thermoplastics polymeric material or a rubber, suitable for use as adhesives, are prepared by(a) dissolving a solid thermoplastics polymeric material, such as a polyvinyl acetal or a nylon polyamide, or rubber in a phenol,(b) adding a nonionic or anionic surface active agent and/or protective colloid,(c) adjusting the mixture to a pH above 7 by addition of a base,(d) adding aqueous formaldehyde solution, or a formaldehyde donor, to a molar ratio of phenol to formaldehyde within the range 1:1 to 1:3,(e) if necessary, adding water, and(f) heating the mixture to form a phenolic resole.

Abstract: New compounds of formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 represents --NR.sup.2 R.sup.3, an alkyl group, a mononuclear aryl group, a phenylalkylene group, or a group of formula ##STR2## R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 each represent --H, --CHR.sup.4 OR.sup.5, --CHR.sup.4 --S--R.sup.6 --COOQ, or ##STR3## R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 in formulae I and III being such that at most one represents a group of formula III and at least two each represent a group --CHR.sup.4 --S--R.sup.6 --COOQ,R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 represent --H or alkyl groups,R.sup.6 is an alkylene group, optionally substituted by a carboxyl group,at least two Q in formula I represent --H and the remainder may alternatively represent alkyl groups,m is 1, 2, or 3, andn is zero or 1,e.g., hexakis(N-2-carboxyethylthiomethyl)melamine, a tris(N-2-carboxyethylthiomethyl)tris(N-2-(butoxymethyl)melamine, or tetrakis(N-2-carboxyethylthiomethyl)acetoguanamine,are useful as curing agents for epoxide resins.

Abstract: Highly methylated methylolguanamines, such as a methylated tetramethylolbenzoguanamine or tetramethylolacetoguanamine, are advanced by heating under acid to neutral conditions with an advancement agent such as benzoguanamine, acetoguanamine, ethyleneurea, 1,3-propyleneurea, melamine, or urea. The products may be heated with resins containing at least two alcoholic hydroxyl, carboxylic acid, or carboxylic amide groups per molecule to form hard, crosslinked coatings. They are particularly useful in powder coatings.
