Patent number: 6891608Abstract: Methods and apparatus for aligning a lens with respect to an axis of beam propagation are disclosed. A position of the lens is adjusted with respect to the axis along one or more directions that lie substantially parallel to a surface of a bulkhead connector. The surface of the bulkhead connector is substantially not parallel to the axis of beam propagation. A position of the lens is adjusted along a direction substantially parallel to the axis of beam propagation. After adjustment, the position of the lens is fixed with respect to the surface. An example of a lens aligning apparatus includes a lens mount configured to receive the lens, a bulkhead connector having a surface, wherein the axis of beam propagation intersects a plane of the surface, means for fixing a position of the lens mount with respect to the surface; and means for fixing a position of the lens with respect to the lens mount.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 2002Date of Patent: May 10, 2005Assignee: Lightwave Electronics CorporationInventors: Mark W. Byer, Derek J. Richard

Patent number: 6366593Abstract: A precision positioning mount for UV-cured adhesives that provides adhesive junctions between modular assembly mounts and structural elements. Contact edges are placed on a first fixating area of an adhesive junction. The contact edges are pronounced edges of faces that slide along a second fixating area during the adjustment process. Thus, the assembly modules and structural elements are precisely referenced before, during and after their positioning and orientating. First and second fixating areas form a cavity that provides a volume for the adhesive. The mounts and structural elements are preferably made of sapphire for increased thermal conductivity. The elements of the assembly mounts are modular and interchangeable and provide various positioning modes.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1999Date of Patent: April 2, 2002Assignee: Lightwave Electronics CorporationInventors: Derek J. Richard, Mark Byer, Gerald Mitchell, George Conway

Patent number: 6320706Abstract: Optical, opto-mechanical and electro-optical elements (OE) of a Laser resonance assembly (LRA) are positioned and fixated in close proximity on an assembly plate by clamping the OE in a vacuum chuck that holds the OE on a clamping portion on the very top of it. The OE is brought into the predetermined position while a lateral attaching surface of the OE is kept in a predetermined angle relative to the assembly plate. A side mount is placed between the mirror and the assembly plate after an UV-curing adhesive has been applied. The attaching surface s and the adhesive have a specific relation between areal extension, surface roughness, uncured viscosity and uncured cohesive force.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2000Date of Patent: November 20, 2001Assignee: Lightwave ElectronicsInventors: Derek J. Patent number: 5146638Abstract: A bath comprises a bath tub and apparatus for assisting persons into and out of the bath tub. The apparatus comprises a lifting column in the form of a telescopic mast, a seat supported by the mast, a first actuator provided for the most part within the mast, for raising and lowering the seat relative to the bath tub, and a second actuator for angularly displacing the mast. The apparatus also comprises a control device for operating the first and second actuators so as to raise the seat from a lowered to an elevated position and to then swivel the seat to a position in which it extends over a rim of the bath tub, and so as to swivel the seat in an opposite direction and to then lower the seat into the bath tub.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1991Date of Patent: September 15, 1992Assignee: Arjo Mecanaids LimitedInventor: Derek J. Richards

Patent number: 5103509Abstract: Apparatus for assisting physically disabled persons into and out of a bath, comprises a base, suckers provided on the base for releasably gripping an inside bottom surface of the bath, a lifting column fixed to the base, a seat supported by the lifting column, and an electrically powered actuator mounted with respect to the lifting column for raising and lowering the seat relative to the base. The lifting column is in the form of a telescopic mast having a lower part fixed to the base and an upper part which can be extended and retracted relative to the lower part by the actuator. The apparatus is self-contained and can be placed in or removed from a bath at will.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1990Date of Patent: April 14, 1992Assignee: Arjo Mecanaids LimitedInventor: Derek J. Richards

Patent number: 5022106Abstract: In order to raise infirm or disabled persons from a sitting to a generally standing position, a hoist comprises a mast, a carrier movable along the mast, and a U-shaped lifting member which is connected at its closed end to an upper end of the mast for pivotable movement about a horizontal axis and which at its open part provides laterally spaced attachment points for the attachment of a body sling. The hoist also includes a U-shaped strut pivotably connected at its closed end to the carrier and at its open part to the open part of the lifting member, and an operating mechanism for raising and lowering the carrier along the mast to thereby move the attachment points along an arcuate path. The operating mechanism is self-locking at any chosen position. Such a hoist is capable of being used for lifting of persons of widely differing heights and builds.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1990Date of Patent: June 11, 1991Assignee: Arjo Mecanaids LimitedInventor: Derek J.
