    Abstract: A furnace comprises a furnace shell rotatable about a rotational axis. The furnace shell provides a furnace chamber for holding a solid particulate reagent as the furnace shell rotates. At least two electrodes are exposed to the chamber and are mounted in electrically insulated fashion therein. The electrodes are spaced apart so that solid particulate reagent in the furnace chamber can be heated up by direct resistance heating thereof, utilizing the electrodes.
