Publication number: 20220268754Abstract: A system for detecting the presence of E. coli and total coliform in a water sample includes a sample holder that holds smaller, divided volumes of the sample and a testing reagent. A plurality of light sources are disposed above sample holder. The divided sample volumes are are illuminated with first and second light sources emitting light at different wavelengths. A bundle of optical fibers is provided with having an input end located adjacent to the divided sample volumes and is configured to receive light passing through the sample volumes. Light is output from the bundle of optical fibers and is captured with a camera. Image processing software is provided and is configured to calculate a light intensity in first and second wavelength channels at different times and outputs a positive/negative indication for E. coli and total coliform for the water sample.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 29, 2020Publication date: August 25, 2022Applicant: THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIAInventors: Aydogan Ozcan, Kevin de Haan, Hatice Ceylan Koydemir, Sabiha Tok, Derek Tseng

Patent number: 11347000Abstract: A micro-plate reader for use with a portable electronic device having a camera includes an opto-mechanical attachment configured to attach/detach to the portable electronic device and includes an array of illumination sources. A slot in the opto-mechanical attachment is dimensioned to receive an optically transparent plate containing an array of wells. Optical fibers are located in the opto-mechanical attachment and transmit light from each well to a reduced size header having, wherein the fiber array in the header has a cross-sectional area that is ?10× the cross-sectional area of the wells in the plate. A lens located in the opto-mechanical attachment transmits light from the header fibers to the camera. Software executed on the portable electronic device or other computer is used to process the images to generate qualitative clinical determinations and/or quantitative index values for the separate wells.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2016Date of Patent: May 31, 2022Assignee: THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIAInventors: Aydogan Ozcan, Brandon Berg, Bingen Cortazar, Derek Tseng, Steve Wei Feng, Haydar Ozkan, Omai Garner, Dino Di Carlo

Publication number: 20190346369Abstract: A multi-well plate reader device includes an opto-mechanical attachment configured to attach/detach to a portable electronic device having a camera. The reader includes a plurality of excitation illumination sources and a slot that receives a well plate. Excitation and emission filters are incorporated into the housing. Optical fibers are located in the attachment and transmit fluorescent light emitted from the wells of the well plate through an optional lens and into the camera. The optical fibers have an input end adjacent to the wells and an output end formed in a header, wherein, in one embodiment, multiple optical fibers are positioned within a cross-sectional area projection defined by the wells and wherein the output ends of optical fibers are mounted in the header. The pattern of the optical fibers is mapped to individual wells in a calibration operation and stored in a fiber map.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 17, 2018Publication date: November 14, 2019Applicant: THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIAInventors: Aydogan Ozcan, Omai Garner, Dino Di Carlo, Qingshan Wei, Derek Tseng, Janay Kong

Patent number: 10175215Abstract: A system for measuring chlorophyll concentration in a leaf sample includes a leaf-holding illuminator device with a main body containing a power source, a plurality of switchable light sources emitting light at different spectra (e.g., red and white light from a broadband light source), and a cap detachably secured to the main body using one or more fastening means. The leaf sample is interposed between the main body and the cap and held in place during imaging. The system includes a mobile electronic device having a camera configured to capture an image of the leaf illuminated by the plurality of switchable light sources, the mobile electronic device having wireless connectivity to a network and an application contained therein configured to transfer the images to a remote sever or computer via the network for data processing. A final chlorophyll index value is calculated based on the transferred images.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2015Date of Patent: January 8, 2019Assignee: THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIAInventors: Aydogan Ozcan, Bingen Cortazar, Hatice Ceylan Koydemir, Derek Tseng, Steve Feng
