  • Patent number: 6074578
Abstract: The invention comprises a plasticating machine for the working and forcing of plastic material into a mold, the machine including an elongated barrel housing having a first or proximal end and a second or distal end, and an elongated screw shaft with a screw flight therearound, the screw shaft being rotatably supported in the elongated barrel housing, for the working of plastic between the screw shaft and the elongated housing. At least one delivery conduit is generally longitudinally arranged within the wall of the housing. The delivery conduit with the housing wall may be arranged to heat or cool the screw and any plastic being worked therethrough. In a further embodiment, it may permit delivery of a medium within the wall, from an upstream location of the housing, into the primary flow path of any plastic being driven from the machine and into a mold.

  • Patent number: 4964730
Abstract: A plasticating extruder screw incorporates two or more screw configurations into a single screw. This is accomplished with two or more parallel channels in which each channel is designed to a different set of materials and performance requirements reflecting the range of the materials to be processed. The extrusion screw in fact represents two or more screws in a single screw in which each performs its function independently of the other. Thus, each channel in this screw differs from the others in critical design parameters such as compression ratio, length and depth of its feed, transition and metering zones. This multiconfigurational design feature may occupy part or the entire length of the extruder as dictated by the specific characteristics of the materials to be processed. A mixing and stabilization zone placed at or near the entrance of the metering zone of the screw provides for melt flow interaction and equilibration between channels.

  • Patent number: 4749279
Abstract: In a copending application Ser. No. 298,065 filed Aug. 31, 1981 modular mixing apparatus has been disclosed combined with a barrel and main power driven extruder screw and the mixing apparatus is necessarily required to be at the same speed as the main power driven extruder screw and operates through a common barrel member. In the present invention improved modular mixing apparatus has been constructed and arranged to operate with independent drive means for rotation in a separate stationary sleeve member and extruded material leaving the main extruder screw and barrel is introduced into the mixing module. The mixing apparatus may, in this form, be driven at variable speeds which are independent of the speed of the main extruder screw. The improved modular mixing apparatus of this invention also includes a newly devised shearing lug module.

  • Patent number: 4697928
Abstract: A helically moving fluid body leaving an extruder screw and brought into contact with rotating shearing means, undergoes laminar displacement, is then guided through a stationary sleeve along undulating linear paths of travel of relatively short axial length, and thereafter undergoes further laminar displacement and discharges into a die.During movement of the fluid mixture along the undulating linear paths of travel subdivision and blending of substantially all of the material in the fluid body, which is not in a fluid state, takes place. Thereupon the blended mixture is advanced to a die member at a desired fluidity and temperature in response to die requirements. Heating of the barrel is significantly reduced and energy conservation of an appreciable nature is achieved. In carrying out mixing as noted above there is employed a modular mixing apparatus constructed with multiple processing means suitable for shearing, kneading, flow diverting, dispersing, blending and the like.

  • Patent number: 3942773
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for extruding plastic materials provides for processing a mixture of plastic particles, additives, dyes, and the like by means of an extruder screw to form a melted mass which is moved in a helically-directed stream in a confined space. At a predetermined point, flow-diverting means in said confined space abruptly changes the flow pattern. Portions of the helically-directed melted mixture advanced by the extruder screw and coming into contact with the flow-diverting means, undergo a continuous shearing action and sheared-away portions of the melted material are constantly turned over upon themselves and forced through restricted passageways of short axial length in a highly turbulent flow pattern. After leaving the restricted passageways, the melted material again moves in a helical path of flow.
