A controller is allocated to the internal combustion engines, and a drive train is selectively connected to both internal combustion engines for driving elements of the work machine. In the case of a double-engine mode, the controller specifies a maximum single power (P1) of the internal combustion engines that is less than the maximum power (P2) that can be specified by the controller for an internal combustion engine operating in the single-engine mode.
