Publication number: 20240032457Abstract: A method of improving crop yields by optimizing seed depth and a separation distance between seeds and fertilizer during planting into a field surface as soil conditions change between negative field portions and positive field portions of the field surface and the transitional field portion lying between the negative and positive field portions wherein the seed depth and separation distance between seeds and fertilizer is increased in adverse soil conditions and decreased in favorable soil conditions.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 4, 2021Publication date: February 1, 2024Inventors: Mark Cresswell, Devin Lung
-
Publication number: 20230301225Abstract: A seeding apparatus includes a trailing arm pivotally attached to an implement frame and a bias element exerting a downward bias force on the trailing arm. Fertilizer and seed furrow openers are attached to the trailing arm such that a seed furrow has a seed furrow depth less than a fertilizer furrow depth of a fertilizer furrow. A packer wheel is rotatably attached to a rear end of the trailing arm. A furrow controller is selectively operative to change the relative positions of the seed furrow opener, the fertilizer furrow opener, and the packer wheel to attain a desired one of a plurality of configurations where in each configuration the seed furrow has a seed furrow depth less than the fertilizer furrow depth to provide a separation distance. The seed depth and separation distance is quickly and conveniently increased in adverse soil conditions and decreased in favorable soil conditions.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 4, 2021Publication date: September 28, 2023Inventors: Mark Cresswell, Devin Lung

Patent number: 10609852Abstract: An implement for preparing a seed bed has a front row of vertical discs, followed by three rows of shanks, followed by harrows and then rolling baskets. A hydraulic cylinder is mounted between each shank and the implement frame and exerts a constant selected trip bias force on the shanks that is adjustable up to 1300 pounds. The implement frame is configured such that a total weight on the wheels when the ground engaging tools are in the raised transport position is greater than about 850 pounds per foot of width of the implement frame. The implement is towed at speeds of at least seven miles per hour with the shanks penetrating the soil to a depth of three inches or more. Residue is cut and buried and the field surface left firm and smooth.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2017Date of Patent: April 7, 2020Assignee: Bourgault Industries Ltd.Inventors: Mark Cresswell, Devin Lung, Kyle Bayne, Trevor Kondratowicz

Patent number: 10299421Abstract: A harrow implement comprises a tool bar and harrow sections extending rearward therefrom. Each of a plurality of hydraulic cylinders is connected between the tool bar and a corresponding harrow section. A hydraulic control is operative to supply pressurized hydraulic fluid such that the hydraulic cylinders exert a substantially constant selected bias force on the harrow sections. The hydraulic control is operative to direct pressurized hydraulic fluid into a first port on each hydraulic cylinder to exert a downward bias force on the plurality of harrow sections, and operative to direct pressurized hydraulic fluid into a second port on each hydraulic cylinder to exert an upward bias force on the plurality of harrow sections. The hydraulic cylinder can be configured to raise the harrow sections to an idle position above the ground, and to a transport position extending up from the tool bar.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2017Date of Patent: May 28, 2019Assignee: Bourgault Industries Ltd.Inventors: Devin Lung, Jesse Drayton

Patent number: 9820424Abstract: An agricultural implement has front flotation wheels with a significantly increased diameter, increasing flotation and improving rolling characteristics, especially in soft soil conditions. The implement has a frame supported on front and rear wheels. Front flotation wheels are pivotally mounted to the frame about vertical axes. A hitch tongue is pivotally attached to the frame about a vertical hitch pivot axis. A wheel control mechanism connects the front flotation wheels to the hitch tongue, and is configured such that when the hitch tongue is in a neutral position the front flotation wheels roll in the operating direction, and pivoting the hitch tongue causes the front flotation wheels to pivot in the same direction.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 2015Date of Patent: November 21, 2017Assignee: Bourgault Industries Ltd.Inventors: Scott Scherman, Devin Lung

Patent number: 8336468Abstract: A furrow opener apparatus attachable to an implement has a trailing arm with a packer wheel at the rear end, and a furrow opener attached forward of the packer wheel. An actuator moves the trailing arm between a lowered operating position and a raised transport position. A latch mechanism engages the implement frame and the trailing arm when the actuator is operated to move the trailing arm to the transport position, preventing the trailing arm from moving downward. A release mechanism moves the latch mechanism to an unlatched position when the actuator is operated to move the trailing arm from the raised transport position to the lowered operating position, allowing the trailing arm to move down from the transport position.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 2010Date of Patent: December 25, 2012Assignee: Bourgault Industries Ltd.Inventor: Devin Lung
