Patent number: 5784679Abstract: An image drying and fixing apparatus for affixing an image to a copy substrate, wherein a drying oven defining a copy substrate inlet and outlet is provided with a conveyor for advancing the copy substrate through the drying oven, and an image impacting system disposed along the path of travel of the copy substrate for pressing the image onto the copy substrate in image configuration. The image impacting system includes a pair of cooperating roll members forming a nip through which the copy substrate having the image thereon passes, with the image impacting system being selectively positionable along the path of travel of the copy substrate for optimizing the process of affixing the image to the copy substrate. The image drying and fixing apparatus may also include a radiant heating device situated within the drying oven, positioned for radiating thermal energy in the direction of the copy substrate immediately prior to passage of the copy substrate through the copy substrate output.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1997Date of Patent: July 21, 1998Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Edward L. Patent number: 5573883Abstract: Disclosed is a liquid developers comprised of a mixture of high and low vapor pressure fluids, and wherein there is enabled with such developers in embodiments excellent fixing characteristics especially when the developed image is transferred from an intermediate substrate to the final substrate, such as paper. In embodiments of the present invention there is provided developers and processes for achieving high fix wherein the developers contains a high vapor pressure fluid, such as an Isopar, like ISOPAR L.RTM., and a low vapor pressure fluid, such as NORPAR 15.RTM., SUPURLA NF5.RTM., and the like, and which low vapor pressure fluid is substantially odorless. The high vapor pressure fluid in embodiments is removed by heat once the developer is transferred to the intermediate substrate, and the low vapor pressure fluid remains with the developer when the developed image is transfixed, that is transferred, fixed and heated simultaneously, to a supporting substrate like paper.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1995Date of Patent: November 12, 1996Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: John S. Berkes, Stewart W. Volkers, Dexter A. Dyer

Patent number: 4903082Abstract: An apparatus which dries and fuses a liquid image of liquid carrier and toner particles to a sheet. The sheet passes through a nip defined by a support member cooperating with a roller. The roller contacts the liquid image on the sheet. Heat is applied to the liquid image to fuse the toner particles to the sheet and vaporize at least a portion of the liquid carrier therefrom. The side of the sheet opposed from the side having the liquid image thereon is maintained at a lower pressure than atmospheric pressure to reduce the amount of heat required to vaporize the liquid carrier and remove the vaporized liquid carrier therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1988Date of Patent: February 20, 1990Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Dexter A. Dyer, Michael J. Langdon, Henry B. Peters, Jr., Thomas F. Szlucha

Patent number: 4897691Abstract: A reproducing machine in which an electrostatic latent image recorded on a photoconductive member is developed with a liquid developer material comprising at least a liquid carrier having pigmented particles dispersed therein. The developed image is transferred from the photoconductive member to a sheet of support material. The sheet of support material having the developed image thereon is dried to remove substantially all of the liquid carrier transferred thereto. The pigmented particles are permanently fused to the sheet of support material in image configuration.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1986Date of Patent: January 30, 1990Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Dexter A. Dyer, Thomas F. Szlucha

Patent number: 4766462Abstract: A reproducing machine in which an electrostatic latent image recorded on a photoconductive member is developed with a liquid developer material comprising at least a liquid carrier having pigmented particles dispersed therein. The developed image is transferred from the photoconductive member to a sheet of support material. The sheet of support material, with the developed image thereon, passes through a housing. In the housing, heat and pressure are applied to the sheet of support material to vaporize the liquid carrier and to fuse the pigmented particles to the sheet of support material in image configuration. An interior surface of the housing is cooled to liquefy the vaporized liquid carrier thereon.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1986Date of Patent: August 23, 1988Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Dexter A. Dyer, William C. Howe, Thomas F. Szlucha

Patent number: 4733272Abstract: A reproducing machine in which a liquid image including a liquid carrier having pigmented particles dispersed therein is transferred to a sheet of support material. In the operative mode, when the sheet of support material having the liquid image thereon is present, a fuser applies heat thereto to remove liquid carrier therefrom so as to dry the sheet of support material, and fuse the pigmented particles thereto in image configuration. In the standby mode, when the sheet of support material is not present, the fuser still generates heat. The liquid carrier removed from the sheet of support material by the fuser is collected in a condenser. Air flowing from the condenser passes through a filter to remove residual liquid carrier therefrom, in the standby mode, heated air from the fuser is directed to the filter to regenerate the filter.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1986Date of Patent: March 22, 1988Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: William C. Howe, Dexter A. Dyer

Patent number: 4731635Abstract: A reproducing machine in which an electrostatic latent image recorded on a photoconductive member is developed with a liquid developer material comprising at least a liquid carrier having pigmented particles dispersed therein. The developed image is transferred from the photoconductive member to a sheet of support material. A pair of rollers cooperate with one another to define a nip through which the sheet of support material having the developed image thereon passes. The pair of rollers apply heat and pressure to the sheet of support material having the developed image thereon. The pigmented particles are fused to the sheet of support material in image configuration and the vaporized liquid carrier removed therefrom.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1987Date of Patent: March 15, 1988Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Thomas F. Szlucha, Dexter A. Dyer, Michael J. Langdon

Patent number: 4727394Abstract: An electrophotographic printing machine in which an electrostatic latent image recorded on a photoconductive member is developed with a liquid developer material having at least a liquid carrier with pigmented particles dispersed therein. The developed image is transferred from a photoconductive member to a sheet of support, material. Heat and pressure are applied to the developed image on the sheet of support material to vaporize substantially all of the liquid carrier transferred to the sheet of support material and to substantially permanently fuse pigmented particles to the sheet of support material in image configuration.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1986Date of Patent: February 23, 1988Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Raphael F. Bov, Jr., Dexter A. Dyer

Patent number: 4723147Abstract: A reproducing machine in which a latent image recorded on a member is developed with a liquid developer material including at least a liquid carrier having pigmented particles dispersed therein. The developed image is transferred from the member to a portion of a moving web of sheet material. The pigmented particles are fused to the web of sheet material in image configuration. A flow of heated air is directed over an extended region of the web of sheet material in a direction parallel to the direction of the movement of the web and in a direction opposed to the direction of movement of the web to vaporize liquid carrier therefrom so as dry the web of sheet material.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1986Date of Patent: February 2, 1988Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Dexter A.
