    Abstract: Novel low viscosity oligomeric polyols and the use thereof in coating compositions are disclosed. The novel low viscosity oligomeric polyols may be prepared by reacting at least one melamine aldehyde resin and at least one of ?,?-diol, ?,?-diol, or mixture thereof. The reaction may occur in the presence of an acid catalyst. Preferred polyols are &agr;,&bgr; diols and &agr;,&ggr; diols. The polyurethane polyol compositions exhibit very low viscosity and are particularly useful in very low VOC coating compositions. The resulting cured coating provides surprisingly improved properties.
