  • Publication number: 20110178994
Abstract: Method, system, and computer program product embodiments for recording data on a contactless integrated circuit (IC) memory associated with a data storage cartridge are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, an index of a plurality of files to be recorded on a storage media of the data storage cartridge is parsed with a table of contents (TOC) profile file to build a table of contents (TOC) specific to an owning application of the plurality of files. The TOC is written to the contactless IC memory.

  • Publication number: 20110170214
Abstract: Magnetic tape devices encounter read and/or write errors when the tape is not being passed across the head with the proper tension and/or skew angle. According to one embodiment, a system which corrects for these problems comprises a head having an array of at least one of readers and writers, a drive mechanism for passing a magnetic recording tape over the head, a skew-inducing mechanism coupled to the head for adjusting a skew angle of a longitudinal axis of the array relative to a direction normal to a direction of tape travel over the head, and a controller in communication with the head. The system also determines a tape dimensional stability state of the tape and adjust the skew angle away from normal to the direction of tape travel and lowers a tension of the tape across the head if the tape dimensional stability state is in a contracted state.

  • Patent number: 7206163
Abstract: A data storage device for recording to and reading from magnetic thread includes a head assembly having an opening through which the magnetic thread passes. Transducing elements are positioned around the inner surface of the opening and interact with longitudinally-extending parallel tracks formatted around the surface of the magnetic thread. If the number of tracks is greater than the number of transducing elements, the transducing elements may be rotatable about the magnetic thread to position the transducing elements to interact with other tracks. The head assembly may open to aid positioning the magnetic thread within the opening in the head assembly during loading. If desired, multiple head assemblies may be placed in the thread path to improve data throughput. The magnetic thread may be formed with a non-circular cross-section and the opening in the head assembly may have a corresponding cross-section to reduce twisting of the magnetic thread as it passes through the opening.
