  • Publication number: 20070183015
Abstract: A spatial light modulator comprises: a first substrate (25); a second substrate (26); a layer of electrooptic material disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate. A first electrode arrangement (27) is disposed over the first substrate (25); and a second electrode arrangement (35) is disposed over the second substrate (26). The first electrode arrangement (27) comprises first and second electrode layers (28,29) disposed over the first substrate, with the spacing between the first electrode layer (28) and the first substrate (25) being different to the spacing between the second electrode (29) layer and the first substrate (25). The first electrode layer (28) and the second electrode arrangement (35) are configured so as to co-operate, in use, to define a plurality of first addressable regions in the electrooptic material.

  • Publication number: 20070058258
Abstract: A parallax optic comprises plural, spaced apart lenses which are separated by regions which are non-tranmissive of/to visible light. In some embodiments, the spaced apart lenses of the parallax optic are discrete elements of a lens array. In other embodiments, the lens elements are formed as convex elements integral with and extending from a lenticular layer. Parallax optic devices are combined with one or more image display elements to form an image display device. For embodiments of image display devices featuring or providing two-dimensional (2D) viewability, the parallax optic is preferably near or included in the image display element. On the other hand, for embodiments of image display devices featuring or providing three-dimensional (3D) viewability, the parallax optic is situated outside the image display element.

  • Publication number: 20070058127
Abstract: A multiple-view directional display is provided having an image display element and a parallax optic (13). The display element (8) comprises substrates (6, 19) between which the display layer (8) is sandwiched and the parallax optic (13) is disposed within the image display element.

  • Publication number: 20070040780
Abstract: A display device is provided that comprises a liquid crystal display panel for displaying an image by spatial light modulation, and circuitry for switching liquid crystal in the panel between having a first configuration in a first mode to cause an image displayed using the panel to be discernible from a wide range of viewing angles, and having a second configuration in a second mode to cause an image displayed using the panel to be discernible substantially only from within a narrow range of viewing angles. Several types of display panel to achieve such in-panel switching between public and private viewing modes are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20050243265
Abstract: A display is provided for switching between a narrow or private viewing mode and a wide or public viewing mode. The display comprises a display device which is controlled to provide display of a desired image or sequence of images. This is associated with a liquid crystal device having at least one liquid crystal layer whose molecules are switchable between a first state providing a first angular viewing range and a second state providing a second angular viewing range which is within and smaller than the first angular viewing range. With the molecules in the second state, the device at least partially blocks light propagating towards part of the first angular viewing range outside the second angular viewing range. The or each liquid crystal layer is in contact with at least one alignment surface, the or each of which comprises a uniform non-patterned alignment surface.

  • Publication number: 20050001787
Abstract: A multiple view display comprises a display device such as an LCD and a parallax generating device such as a parallax barrier. The LCD and the barrier cooperate to form viewing regions for viewing a stereoscopic pair of views or for different viewers to see unrelated views from the same display. The display device comprises composite pixel groups, each of which comprises red, green and blue pixels with at least two pixels of the same colour and receiving the same image data. The pixels of the same colour may be connected together to receive the same image data or may be supplied with the same image data by a controller.
