  • Patent number: 6400942
Abstract: A relatively large short message (BC-SMS) is broadcast to a selected group of mobile subscriber stations within a cellular radio system. Each BC-SMS message greater in size than a predetermined number of octets is divided into segments, formatted into a separate modified paging message (PBC) which is unrecognizable to existing mobiles but recognizable to new mobiles. The BC-SMS message segments are broadcast in sequence as modified paging messages to the mobiles within the region of the system where the selected group is believed to be operating. Each paging message includes the essential elements of a paging message, a message ID number, a sequence number and the message segment payload.

  • Patent number: 6307845
Abstract: A packet-switched voice call directed to a mobile subscriber unit in a cellular communication network is processed by determining whether the mobile subscriber unit is in a circuit-switched mode of operation and, if so, either forwarding the information in the packet-switched voice call to a destination other than the mobile subscriber unit or notifying the mobile subscriber unit that the packet-switched voice call is waiting.

  • Patent number: 6246670
Abstract: A method, and associated apparatus, prevents misrouting of packet-data in a radio communication system subsequent to an abnormal communication session termination by a wireless host. When a determination is made that a communication session between a wireless host and another host has terminated abnormally, a temporary address used to identify the wireless host is not permitted to be immediately reassigned to identify another wireless host. Misrouting of data to another wireless host subsequent to the abnormal communication session, termination is thereby avoided.

  • Patent number: 6222829
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for effectuating voice communication between a mobile station and a mobile radio network. A gateway to the mobile radio network receives an incoming voice call for a destination mobile station and accesses information pertaining the status and location of the destination mobile station. A determination is made as to whether the destination mobile station is capable of operation in a voice mode using circuit-switched communications across a traffic channel. If the destination mobile station is operable in the voice mode, a circuit-switched communication on a traffic channel is established between the mobile radio network and the destination mobile station. Otherwise, the incoming voice call is routed to a voice gateway which converts the voice call to data packets and routes the data packets to the mobile station across an Internet Protocol communication network to a packet gateway of the mobile radio network.

  • Patent number: 6137791
Abstract: A roaming mechanism enabling a mobile station to roam between a first data packet network utilizing a Mobile IP Method (MIM) and a second data packet network utilizing a Personal Digital Cellular Mobility Method (PMM) is disclosed. A foreign agent (FA) is introduced into the PMM network for enabling a mobile station associated with the MIM network and currently roaming within the PMM network to communicate packet data with an associated home agent (HA). A home agent (HA) is further introduced into the PMM network for enabling a mobile station associated with the PMM network and currently roaming within the MIM network to communicate packet data with an associated FA or Mobile IP Client Emulator (MICE) currently serving the roaming mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6047194
Abstract: A method, and associated apparatus, for the selective transmission of packet data to a mobile terminal operable in a radio communication system. When packet data is to be terminated at the mobile terminal, an SMS (short message service) message is first transmitted to the mobile terminal. A determination is made at the mobile terminal whether to permit transmission of packet data thereto. The packet data is transmitted to the mobile terminal if permission is granted by the mobile terminal.

  • Patent number: 5943616
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method for the exchange of standards information facilitates communication by invoking a standards translator whenever two users within the system utilize incompatible communication technologies. In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, standards information is interchanged between two communications nodes, such that the equipment at those nodes may communicate with each other directly if the same standards are used at both nodes or communicate through the aid of the standards translator when different standards are used. The system and method of the present invention, through the interchange of standards information between the nodes, minimizes communications disruptions caused by mismatched standards.

  • Patent number: 5903851
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing a call circuit connection between a mobile station and a remote application host is disclosed. Once a call circuit connection is initially established between a mobile station and remote application host to enable data to transfer therebetween, the call circuit connection is monitored for detection of an idle condition. Upon detection of the idle condition, identifying information for the call circuit connection is stored, and a first portion of the call circuit connection is disconnected while maintaining a second portion of the connection. Upon a request for reconnection of the call circuit connection, the first portion of the call circuit connection is reestablished with the second portion to enable continued data transfer.
