Abstract: A sensor system is described that leverages low power motion sensors to trigger the activation of higher power proximity sensors. The system may be configured to monitor the motion of a vehicle, such as an aircraft in which it is installed. The sensor system may initially start in a dormant state, and once the vehicle is moved, such as when an aircraft is towed, a proximity sensor may be activated, which draws power from a dedicated battery unit. Once the proximity sensor is activated, the sensor system may continue to monitor proximity data generated by the proximity detection system and sound an alarm if the vehicle comes within a threshold distance of some object. The sensor system may also utilize state of the vehicle's electrical system to recharge the battery and/or to disable various components, thereby optimizing power consumption.
