  • Patent number: 10085296
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system in which connections are pre-established without any UE association and are then a pre-established connection is selected and associated with a UE when the UE seeks to attach. Each pre-established connection could include an S5 tunnel between an SGW and PGW and an IP address assignment. And upon UE attachment, an MME could readily signal with a base station to establish an S1-U tunnel for the UE, and to convey the IP address assignment to the UE, without having to wait for establishment of the S5 tunnel and assignment of the IP address, and the MME could further signal with the SGW to cause the S5 tunnel and IP address assignment to be made UE specific and to tie the S5 tunnel with the newly established S1-U tunnel. Further, the quantity and service level of connections pre-established could be based on historical trends.

  • Patent number: 9763192
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for adjusting a sleep schedule of a wireless device in a wireless network. A mobility of a wireless device may be determined to exceed a threshold mobility. The wireless device may be operating in a sleep mode with a discontinuous reception schedule having listening intervals separated by sleep periods. A source access node may request to handover the wireless device to a target access node and may provide information to the target access node regarding the determined mobility and the determined sleep mode before handover completion. The target access node may then initiate wireless communication with the wireless device during a listening interval previously scheduled by the source access node. After the initial communication with the target access node, the wireless device may resume the previously determined sleep mode in order to optimize power use of the wireless device.

  • Patent number: 9736729
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for requesting a UE to forgo handover to a congested neighbor. In particular, a wireless communication system may serve the UE over an air interface connection between the UE and the first base station. While serving the UE, the wireless communication system may receive from the UE a handover request requesting a handover of the UE from the first base station to a second base station. In response to receiving from the UE the handover request, the wireless communication system may determine that the second base station is threshold congested, and, responsive to the determining, (i) deny the handover request and (ii) send to the UE a command for the UE to withhold transmission of further requests for handover of the UE from the first base station to the second base station.

  • Patent number: 9681349
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for offloading traffic in a wireless communication network. A plurality of active wireless devices in communication with a first access node may be detected. Measurement and reporting information may be received at the first access node from the wireless devices indicating proximity to a second access node. It may be determined that a loading level at the first access node has exceeded a threshold value. The second access node may be updated to operate in a closed access mode. A criteria for selecting a wireless device in communication with the first access node for traffic offload may be determined. Closed access mode information associated with the second access node may be provided to the selected wireless device. The first access node and/or a controller node may instruct the selected wireless device to communicate with the second access node.

  • Patent number: 9648529
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for avoiding packet loss during a handover. A handover request may be received at a control element of a first communication network. It may be determined that the handover request comprises a first type of handover request. A gateway node of the first communication network may be instructed to buffer packets for the wireless device based on the determination that the handover request comprises a first type of handover request. And the gateway node may be instructed to stop buffering the packets for the wireless device based on an execution of the requested handover.

  • Patent number: 9185541
Abstract: Systems and methods of determining wireless data usage are provided. Wireless data usage of a wireless device on a first network of a first network operator is determined. A message indicating a performance of a handover of the wireless device from the first network to a second network of a second network operator is received and the wireless data usage of the wireless device on the second network is determined based on the message received.

  • Patent number: 9125167
Abstract: A system and method of paging a wireless device in a communication network is provided. A paging request from a first network for a first wireless device can be received at a paging node in communication with a first network and a second network. A paging message for the first wireless device can be generated at the paging node based on the paging request. The paging message can further comprise an identifier of the first network. The paging message can be broadcast to a plurality of wireless device, the plurality of wireless devices comprising the first wireless device and at least one second wireless device associated with the second network. A paging response can be received from the first wireless device based on the paging message.
