    Abstract: A paper-making machine and process, in which a paper web passes over a pope roller to a main roll and a new roll can be brought into contact with the pope roller when the main roll becomes a full roll, is improved by arranging at least two paper cutting tools to cut a paper web from each of two outer lateral edges to form two or more leader portions. A tail of the paper web formed on the full roll is symmetric and the leader portions on the new roll are also symmetric. Adhesive spray or tape can be applied to the paper web in the area of the leader portions. Air jets can also be used to bias the leader portions towards a surface of the new roll.

    Abstract: A movable water jet edge trimmer has an integral trim chute attached to a cutting support plate for the trimmer. The support plate has a cutting aperture and a series of suction apertures located inboard of the outside edge of the travelling web for supporting the web against the support plate as a water jet passes out through the cutting aperture away from the support plate and through the web. The support plate has a curved surface located downstream and outboard of the cutting aperture which curves into a trim chute opening of a trim chute. Negative pressure is applied from the trim chute to the trim chute opening to draw any strip of material cut from the edge of the web over the curved surface and into the trim chute.

    Abstract: A water jet web slitting apparatus slits a web at a plurality of locations across the web into webs of smaller width in a winder. The water jet web slitting apparatus utilizes a water jet cutter to slit the web. The water jet cutter has a support plate with a pattern of suction apertures located surrounding the cutting aperture of the water jet cutter through which negative pressure is applied to hold the web against the support plate adjacent the water jet cutting apparatus and to prevent the web from fluttering or moving relative to the support plate notwithstanding whether the web is travelling or temporarily at a stopped position. This permits for the water jet to be run continuously without having to be turned off and restarted when the web travel is temporarily stopped and started again because the continually running jet does not re-wet the surface of the web or the edges cut into the web.

    Abstract: A water jet cutting apparatus for use in a papermaking machine has an elongated support beam that extends across the width of the web. The water jet cutting apparatus utilizes a free spinning hose wheel about which the water jet hose supplying water to a water jet nozzle is guided and stretched. The wheel is mounted for movement with a slower moving carriage along the beam adjacent a faster moving carriage carrying the water jet nozzle. The slower moving carriage moves along the beam at speeds which are one half the speeds at which the faster moving carriage moves across the beam. During this movement of the second slower moving carriage, the wheel reels the hose thereabout to provide a travelling intermediate support for the hose. The hose wheel supports the weight of the hose and maintains it in alignment with the faster moving carriage so that less strain and stress is placed on the hose and the ends of the hose connected to the water jet nozzle during movement of the water jet nozzle across the beam.

    Abstract: A directional tail transfer apparatus includes a tray that defines a longitudinal path line extending along the tray overwhich a paper tail to be threaded travels. The longitudinal path line of the tray is positioned adjacent a first section in a papermaking machine where the paper tail exits. The longitudinal path line is aligned with the initial path of movement of the paper tail. The tray has with one or more creases, which extend across the tray width and bisect the longitudinal path line to effect a natural change in direction of the longitudinal path line through the tray. At least one of the creases bisects the longitudinal path line at predetermined angles other than 90 degrees to provide a lateral displacement in the portion of the tray that follows this crease. This one crease allows the paper tail to fold along its width on an angle that is not perpendicular to the natural downstream path of travel of paper tail.
