  • Patent number: 4523821
Abstract: In a device for examining anterior sections of the eye, based on the Scheimpflug principle, an electric receiver is provided in the imaging-beam path for electronic evaluation of results of the examination. Various meridian sections in the patient's eye are produced by means of a rotatable prism. A fixation object and a graticule in the illumination beam path enable easy reproducibility of measurement results, as well as facilitating follow-up examinations which seek to observe the same eye for changes, from one examination to a later examination.

  • Patent number: 4497700
Abstract: Optical filters, e.g. for reflecting infrared radiation while passing visible light radiation is made by applying to the silver reflective coating a protective coating of a metal oxide by magnetron cathode sputtering and only thereafter is the dereflective layer applied by magnetron cathode sputtering. The protective coating-oxygen partial pressure and coating rate are substantially less than the dereflective coating-oxygen partial pressure and coating rate. Apparently the protective coating prevents damage to the reflective coating.

  • Patent number: 4234252
Abstract: The invention contemplates apparatus for simultaneous photometric observation of a plurality of elements in a liquid sample, wherein a dilute solution of the sample is atomized and fed to an elongate steady flame and wherein light from a hollow-cathode lamp, and containing at least one narrow-band emission line of one of the elements to be determined, is directed through the flame; plural photoelectric receivers, each with an associated filter unique to a line characteristic of a different specific element to be determined, are disposed to respond to light passing through the flame or to light emitted by the flame, as the case may be. The detected outputs of the receivers are fed to a computer for evaluation, the outputs of emission receivers being first electronically processed for the effective removal of "dust flashes" in the flame.

  • Patent number: 4231991
Abstract: Apparatus for crystallizing an amorphous material which is in granular form involves admitting the granular synthetic resin into a vertical crystallization zone and permitting the granular resin to descend through this zone under the influence of gravity. A counterflow of hot gas is passed through the descending granular resin and heats the latter to a temperature at which it transforms from an amorphous to a crystalline state. Once the granular resin has passed through the crystallization zone, it is subjected to abrasion for the purpose of separating crystalline particles which adhere to one another. An apparatus for carrying out the method includes a vertical vessel which extends outwardly and downwardly and which may be of rectangular or circular cross-section. An inlet for granular material and an outlet for spent gas are provided at the top of the vessel. An outlet for the crystallized material and an inlet for hot gas are provided at the bottom of the vessel.

  • Patent number: 4164441
Abstract: A corrosive liquid such as sulphuric acid is concentrated using two spaced concentric tubes. A film of the acid flows down the inside of the inner tube and hot flue gases contact the outside of the outer tube. Advantageously, the inner tube transmits radiant energy, e.g. is made of quartz, so the outer tube heats the inner tube by radiation. This absence of mechanical stress on the inner tube increases its life. The water vapor is taken off at the top of the inner tube and concentrated solution at the bottom. If desired, the tubes could be reversed with the flue gases going through the inner tube and the outer tube being of quartz with the liquid flowing on its outside.

  • Patent number: 4061475
Abstract: A high methane gas which can be substituted for natural gas is produced from a primary gas made by the gasification of coal, tar, or heavy residual oil under superatmospheric pressures. The primary gas is purified to remove catalyst poisons and is scrubbed to remove carbon dioxide to a residual content below 2% by volume. The water vapor to carbon monoxide volume ratio of the scrubbed gas is adjusted to 0.55 : 1 to 1 : 1 and is then passed through a reaction zone containing a shift conversion catalyst and a methanation catalyst in a volume ratio of approximately 1 : 4 to 1 : 10. The scrubbed gas entering the reaction zone enters the reaction zone at a temperature of 300.degree.-500.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 4016189
Abstract: A gas which can be substituted for natural gas is produced from a raw gas containing hydrogen and carbon oxides which is produced by the gasification of coal, tar or heavy residual oils under superatmospheric pressure. The raw gas is cooled, purified to remove catalyst poisons, particularly sulfur compounds, and then subjected to methanation and at least two stages in contact with nickel catalysts under pressures of 5-100 bars and at temperatures in the range of 200.degree.-500.degree. C. The product gas from the preceding methanation stage is reacted in the last methanation stage in contact with a catalyst which is indirectly cooled by a gas flowing in a countercurrent to the gas to be reacted.

  • Patent number: 3996014
Abstract: A reactor for catalytically converting gases containing carbon oxides, hydrogen and water vapor into methane under elevated temperatures and pressures. The reactor includes a substantially cylindrical outer shell which is provided at opposite end faces with a gas inlet and a gas outlet. An inner vessel contains part of the catalyst volume for the reactor which is impermeable to gas adjacent to the gas inlet. The inner vessel has a substantially cylindrical shell which defines a flow passage with the inner surface of the outer shell of the reactor and has openings for the radially inward passage of the gas mixture to be reacted. A perforated central gas-collecting tube containing no catalyst is positioned in the inner vessel and one or preferably two additional catalyst beds are positioned between the inner vessel and the gas outlet.
