Patent number: 6349583Abstract: In a method of forming a hollow workpiece having open ends by inner pressure in a multi-part forming tool, the forming tool having a forming mold is heated and the workpiece is placed into the forming mold of the forming tool. Closing plugs are inserted into the open ends of the workpiece, wherein the closing plugs are components of closing cylinders, in order to seal off the open ends. The forming tool is closed. A heated pressure fluid is introduced into the hollow workpiece through at least one of the closing plugs, with the hollow workpiece having been heated and plasticized in the forming tool. The material of the hollow workpiece is pressed with the heated pressure fluid into the forming mold of the forming tool. The device for performing the method has a multi-part forming tool with a forming mold for the workpiece. Hydraulic closing cylinders with closing plugs are provided for sealing the open ends of the workpiece. The forming tool has a heating device for heating at least the forming mold.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2000Date of Patent: February 26, 2002Assignee: Benteler AGInventors: Jürgen Kleinschmidt, Dieter Töpker, Elmar Grussmann

Patent number: 5527082Abstract: The tubular reinforcement member (2) has a circular cross section. Compared to the end portions serving for fastening the reinforcement member to the inner side of the door, the middle portion (1) in longitudinal direction of the reinforcement member has a greater resistance against bending loads. For this purpose, at least one sheet steel strip (4) extending parallel to the longitudinal axis (3) of the reinforcement member is tangentially fastened to the periphery of the middle portion (1) in a plane extending parallel to the impact direction (5). The width (B) of the sheet steel strip (4) is overall smaller than the thickness (D) of the reinforcement member. The width (B) decreases in accordance with the bending moment pattern toward the ends of the sheet steel strip (4). The decrease in width may be linear or parabolical.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1994Date of Patent: June 18, 1996Assignee: Benteler AGInventors: Dieter Topker, Werner Bohmer

Patent number: 5107693Abstract: A die (2) formed of two halves (4, 5) is placed in a container (7) filled with an incompressible liquid. The die halves have a plane of contact disposed in parallel relation with and spaced from the axis of a hollow member to be deformed within a die cavity formed by the die halves. Mandrils (15) are forced into sealing contact with the open ends of the hollow member by hydraulic cylinders. A high deformation pressure is supplied into the hollow member and the mandrils are secured in sealing contact with the hollow member against such pressure.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1991Date of Patent: April 28, 1992Assignee: Benteler AktiengesellschaftInventors: Egon Olszewski, Rainer Hansen, Dieter Topker
