  • Patent number: 6132558
Abstract: Paper and cardboard are produced by draining pulps, with sheet formation and drying of the sheets, by a process in which first(a) polyethyleneimines having a molar mass M.sub.w of more than 500,000 or polymers containing vinylamine units and having a molar mass of from 5000 to 3 million and then(b) cationic polyacrylamides or polymers containing vinylamine units, the molar masses M.sub.w of the polymers each being at least 4 million, are added to the pulps, and the pulp is then subjected to at least one shearing stage and is flocculated by adding bentonite, colloidal silica or clay.

  • Patent number: 6083348
Abstract: Paper is produced by draining a paper stock containing process chemicals on a paper machine, a main stream of the paper stock and a dilution stream which consists of white water, contains at least 5% by weight of the process chemicals and amounts to 5-35% by volume of the total head box feed being fed via a head box to the paper machine wire. The papers thus produced have an excellent formation profile and an outstanding ash distribution.

  • Patent number: 6057404
Abstract: Polymers containing .beta.-hydroxyalkylvinylamine units, which are obtainable by reacting polymers containing vinylamine units with epoxides of the formula ##STR1## where R=C.sub.2 -C.sub.28 -alkyl, phenyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 -alkylphenyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.18 -alkenyl, are described, as are a process for preparing the polymers and use of the polymers as retention and drainage aids and flocculants and as fixatives in paper making, as protective colloid for producing alkyldiketene dispersions or alkenylsuccinic anhydride dispersions, as emulsifier for producing aqueous filler suspensions and as corrosion inhibitor.

  • Patent number: 6048945
Abstract: A graft polymer obtained by free radically polymerizing:(A) a monomer or monomer mixture comprising:(a) from 10-100% by weight of a N-vinylcarboxamide of the formula: ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, (b) from 0-90% by weight of at least one other monoethylenically unsaturated monomer which is copolymerizable with (a), and(c) from 0-5% by weight of at least one monomer having at least two ethylenically unsaturated nonconjugated double bonds in the molecule, in the presence of(B) a polytetrahydrofuran or a polymer which contains at least 3 units of a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkylene oxide and is a hornopolymer of C.sub.2-4 -alkylene oxide having two free terminal OH groups or random or block copolymers of C.sub.2-4 -alkylene oxides having two free terminal OH groups or the reaction products of C.sub.

  • Patent number: 5739190
Abstract: A process for the preparation of a stable water-in-oil emulsion of a hydrolyzed polymer of an N-vinyl amide of the formula ##STR1## in which R and R.sup.1 denote H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, by the polymerization of a compound of the formula I alone or in admixture with another ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a polymerization initiator and emulsifier in the form of a water-in-oil emulsion, to form a water-in-oil polymeric emulsion, followed by hydrolysis of the polymer in the form of the water-in-oil polymeric emulsion in the presence of an acid or base and from 1 to 30 wt %, based on the polymer, of an emulsifier, the emulsifier used being a mixture of(a) from 5 to 95 wt % of a block or graft copolymer of the structure (A-B)m, (A)-B or (B)-A, in which in each case(a) from 5 to 95 wt % of a block or graft copolymer of the structure (A-B).sub.m, (A).sub.n B or (B).sub.
