Known inspection means have the disadvantage that they are very expensive. The invention provides a cost-efficient alternative. To this end, blanks are illuminated laterally at one or more border edges (22) while the inspection means (39) scans the blank (12) at an essentially frontal aspect.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method of, and to a device for, checking cigarettes (12) during the production or packaging of the cigarettes (12), a push rod (35) being displaced axially in the direction of a cigarette end, with the result that, in the event of the incorrect formation or absence of a cigarette (12), the push rod (35) assumes a position other than an ideal position. The invention is based on the problem of improving the operation of checking cigarettes and of configuring this operation such that it is less susceptible to malfunctioning. This problem is solved by a method according to the invention in that an electric, magnetic or electromagnetic field assigned to a sensor (32, 53) is influenced in dependence on the position of the push rod (35), a signal which corresponds to the push-rod position being generated as a result of said field being influenced. The invention also relates to a device for implementing said method.

Abstract: With rapidly-operating packaging machines for cigarette packages, monitoring of blanks is becoming increasingly necessary, such a system supervising the feed of correct blanks in the correct relative position. The same applies to monitoring systems for revenue seals.In the method according to the invention for monitoring blanks or revenue seals with the aid of a sensor, contours of an edge and of a surface of the blank or of the revenue seal are scanned. Pulses obtained thus are compared with a reference value by an evaluating unit.

Abstract: The ends of cigarettes (10) are verified in a cigarette magazine (12) by testing units (24, 25) coordinated with the ends of cigarettes (10) at a testing level (20). The testing units (24, 25) consist of mutually adjacent and removable testing elements (33) with transmitters (28, 29) and planar receivers (30, 31) at the sides of the cigarettes. The testing units (24, 25) are fitted so that they can move parallel to the axis of the cigarettes (10) relative to the cigarette magazine (12), so that the testing unit (25) can moved back in order to advance the cigarettes from the cigarette magazine (12).
