  • Patent number: 4464294
Abstract: A process for the consolidation or stabilization of radioactive wastes in a glass matrix, wherein a glass smelt which has been enriched with the active material is solidified through cooling. The process is distinguished in that the maximally 1200.degree. C. hot gas smelt with the active waste within the final respository container is brought into contact prior to its cooling, at least along its surface, with a solid viscosity-increasing oxide up to at least a partial dissolution thereof. Among such oxides are aluminum oxide and zirconium oxide, wherein unsintered aluminum oxide is preferred.

  • Patent number: 4344872
Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing waste products from solutions of fission products, especially nitric solutions, which contain ruthenium. The method utilizes concentration and solidification, especially vitrification, with the solution being concentrated to a solid content of at least about 15 to 20% in a vacuum at a pressure of at most about 50 mm Hg. The apparatus includes a vacuum evaporator, a subsequent mixing device which is fed by nitrate decomposing agents and vitrifiers, and a vitrifying oven. A drying device may be interposed between the mixing device and the oven. Preferably an ammonia derivative, especially urea, is added to the concentrate before solidification.

  • Patent number: 4204975
Abstract: The material to be encapsulated is filled into the lower section of a metal ube above a filter layer resting on a grate, and a block of encapsulation metal is loaded into the same tube resting on a sieve that separates it from the contaminated material below. If the encapsulation metal is aluminum, the air in the tube is first replaced by an inert gas supplied through a riser pipe that connects with the tube below the grate while the air is removed through a pipe in the top cover. The central portion of the tube is then heated to melt the encapsulation metal and a vacuum is applied through the riser pipe to suck the molten metal into the mass of contaminated material, through the grate, and for some distance up the riser pipe. The connecting pipes at the top and bottom of the tube are pinched off to seal the capsule.

  • Patent number: 3941541
Abstract: A blow mandrel for the production of hollow bodies in a hollow blow mold, particular for the production of filled bottles sealed ready for shipment, from a length of tubing of a thermoplastic resin, having an axially displaceable blow pipe adapted to be surrounded by an edge of the mold opening. The blow mandrel comprises the aforementioned blow pipe and, at its mouth section, a sealing ring protruding outwardly beyond the circumferential surface of the blow pipe and extending in closed form in the circumferential direction of the pipe upon blowing in the region of the edge of the opening of the blow mold. The sealing ring has, on its side turned toward the mold cavity, an annular groove open in the direction of the blow-mold cavity.
