  • Publication number: 20160182338
Abstract: A method and information handling system (IHS) for controlling an IHS in response to an environmental event includes a management controller dynamically polling at least one environmental event source for environmental event data. The environmental event data is received from the environmental event source. A first environmental event value is identified within the environmental event data. The method further includes determining if the first environmental event value is outside of a threshold specification. In response to the first environmental event value being outside of the threshold specification, a first action associated with the first environmental event value is identified. The IHS is triggered to perform the first action.

  • Publication number: 20160183406
Abstract: A fan control subsystem may control a plurality of fans in an information handling system to cool the information handling system. The fan control subsystem may determine a fan importance factor for each of the plurality of fans based on the presence and thermal priority ratings of one or more thermal components located in a respective thermal region associated with each of the plurality of fans. Upon detecting a failure of one of the plurality of fans, the fan control subsystem may regulate airflow within the information handling system based on the fan importance factors determined for the fans.

  • Publication number: 20160116961
Abstract: Server information handling system LED indication lights and other illumination devices are selectively illuminated based upon override configuration settings pushed down from a data center administrative tool. A chassis management controller that manages a blade or rack with plural server information handling systems overrides indication light illumination at blade or rack components, such as power supply and I/O modules. Power saved by reducing indication light illumination is allocated to support operation of one or more server information handling systems.

  • Publication number: 20160081231
Abstract: A thermal response engine on an information handling system compares a processor thermal response to a predetermined workload with an expected thermal response to the predetermined workload in order to validate that a heat sink disposed on the processor matches a heat sink used by a thermal controller profile to manage thermal conditions of the information handling system. If the heat sink thermal characteristics fail to match up with expected thermal characteristics, the thermal response engine provides the thermal controller with an appropriate thermal profile and alerts the end user of an incompatibility.

  • Publication number: 20150192937
Abstract: A method of thermal control in a chassis is presented. An example method of thermal control can include each of one or more blades reporting a requested fan blade speed to a CMC controller where the CMC controller performs an auction of the requested fan blade speed, determines a high value and assigning a corresponding active blade, and reporting the high value to the blades. The active blade then provides fan speed alerts while the passive blades provide fan speed alerts only when the new fan speed request exceeds the high value.

  • Publication number: 20150100176
Abstract: A computer-implemented method enables Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) progress code based thermal control during start-up of an information handling system. A start-up thermal control sub-system detects each BIOS progress code provided during a boot loading operation of the information handling system and determines whether a detected BIOS progress code has an associated cooling level requirement that is different from a current cooling level provided by one or more cooling devices of the information handling system. In response to the detected BIOS progress code having an associated cooling level requirement that is different from the current cooling level provided by the one or more cooling devices, the one or more cooling devices are triggered to adjust the current cooling level to a next pre-established cooling level associated with the detected BIOS progress code.
