  • Patent number: 6392006
Abstract: The invention relates to a linear or branched polymer containing ester groups and at least one amidegroup in the backbone, having hydroxyalkylamide end groups and having a weight average molecular mass of ≧800 g/mol. The invention also relates to an entirely or partly modified polymer. The polymer according to the invention can for example be obtained by reaction of a cyclic anhydride and an alkanolamine to form a &bgr;-hydroxyalkylamide, after which a polyesteramide is obtained through polycondensation. The polymers according to the invention can, for example, be used in thermosetting powder-paint compositions.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 24, 2000
Date of Patent: May 21, 2002
    Assignee: DSM N.V.
Inventors: Rudolfus A. T. M. Van Benthem, Johan Rietberg, Dirk A. W. Stanssens

  • Patent number: 6124371
Abstract: The invention relates to a composition comprising polymerizable material and an anionic photocatalyst. The photocatalyst is a photolabile compound able to liberate a strong base having a pK.sub.a .gtoreq.12. The catalyst can be illustrated by the structural formula Z-A wherein Z is a photolabile group and A is a strong base, for example, a nitrogen containing compound such as, a secondary amine, a guanidine or amidine and Z is covalently bound to A.

  • Patent number: 5830943
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a modified polymer by reaction between a reactive polymer and at least a compound containing two or more functional groups. The polymer, which is solid at room temperature, is mixed, at a temperature at which the viscosity of the polymer is lower than 10000 dPas (measured according to Emila), with a compound containing two or more functional groups in a mixing means for achieving a homogeneous product and the mean residence time and the residence time distribution being chosen so that more than 50% of the reactive groups of the polymer has reacted. As means to make the composition homogeneous use is made of a static mixer. The functional groups of the compound containing two or more functional groups have different reactivities. The invention also relates to a binder composition, which comprises the modified polymer thus obtained and a crosslinker.

  • Patent number: 5728779
Abstract: A binder composition for thermosetting powder paints comprising (i) a polymer that is capable of reacting with epoxy groups and (ii) a crosslinker that contains epoxy groups, wherein the crosslinker comprises at least one C.sub.5 to C.sub.26 linear or branched aliphatic chain with the proviso that epoxy groups are carried on at least one aliphatic chain. In order to function as a crosslinker the amount of oxirane-oxygen originating from the crosslinker in the binder composition is higher than 0.1 meq/gram. The crosslinker is, for example, an epoxydized oil, a modified epoxydized oil or an epoxydized alkyd resin. A powder paint comprising the binder composition can contain a suitable catalyst and, optionally, an additional curing agent.

  • Patent number: 5512204
Abstract: The invention relates to novel bis-iminoazacyclo pentane polyols according to the formula given below, whereinR.sup.1 =H, alkyl or R.sup.4, whereby R.sup.4 is OH, hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyaryl or hydroxyaralkyl andR.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently of one another, OH, hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyaryl or hydroxyaralkyl which are obtainable by reaction of succinonitrile with a hydroxyalkylamine, to polyols obtained on the basis of such compounds, in which a polyether, a polyester or a vinylpolymer or combinations thereof are also incorporated, and to polymers in which said polyols are incorporated. Polyurethane foam in which 1-(hydroxyethyl)-2,5-bis-(2-hydroxyethylimino)-azacyclopentane is incorporated shows a higher mechanical strength and reduced inflammability, whilst the formulation has an increased reactivity.
