  • Publication number: 20170218132
Abstract: A method of making a plastic article is disclosed. According to this method, a plastic article is formed from a thermoplastic composition that includes a first polymer component that is (i) a poly(siloxane-carbonate) copolymer, (ii) a poly(aliphatic ester)-polycarbonate having soft block ester units, derived from monomers including an alpha, omega C6-20 aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof, a dihydroxyaromatic compound, and a carbonate source, (iii) a thermoplastic polyurethane, (iv) a thermoplastic polyurethane, or a combination comprising any of the foregoing. An additive such as a photochromic dye is then loaded into the plastic article by contacting a surface of the article with supercritical fluid carbon dioxide comprising the additive dissolved or dispersed therein.

  • Publication number: 20170056883
Abstract: A system includes a non-vertical channel containing a fluid forming a fluid meniscus having a capillary length and a contact angle ?. The channel in cross-section has a perimeter length |?| and an area |?|. The cross-section of the non-vertical channel is selected so as to define a constant Lagrange multiplier ?, where ?=|?|cos ?/|?|. A functional ?[?*]?|?*|?cos ?|?*|+(1/a2)G*+?|?*| is minimised to define a minimum value ?0=Min?. At a critical transition where ?=0, the fluid defines a smooth arc of length [?*] that divides the cross-section of the channel into two parts. |?*| is the cross-sectional area of the fluid, which has a curve of length |?*| in contact with the channel, and G* represents a vertical position of the centre of mass of the fluid multiplied by the cross-sectional area |?*|. How far the fluid meniscus extends along the channel is controlled by one or more parameters of the functional ?[?*].

  • Patent number: 8173247
Abstract: Stiff, lightweight composite materials that include a Class A surface finish as well as methods of making these composites and articles that include these composites. The fiber reinforced HPPC composite sheet material includes a glass laminate layer and a metal layer. The metal layer covers the unidirectional glass fibers in the HPPC composite while the glass laminate layer gives the composite mechanical puncture resistance, while providing a composite sheet material with Class A surface properties that is still lightweight.
