  • Patent number: 9513811
Abstract: The subject matter disclosed herein provides methods for materializing data from an in-memory array to one or more pages. An in-memory array holding a column of data can be maintained. One or more pages can be maintained. Each of the one or more pages can have one or more rows for storing the column of data. At least one of the one or more pages can be marked for materialization. The column of data can be materialized by copying the data from the in-memory array to the one or more rows of the one or more pages. The materializing can be based on the marking. Related apparatus, systems, techniques, and articles are also described.

  • Publication number: 20160154815
Abstract: Data records of a data set can be stored in multiple main part fragments retained in on-disk storage. Each fragment can include a number of data records that is equal to or less than a defined maximum fragment size. Using a compression that is optimized for each fragment, each fragment can be compressed. After reading at least one of the fragments into main system memory from the on-disk storage, an operation can be performed on the fragment or fragments while the in the main system memory.

  • Patent number: 9354988
Abstract: A physical storage volume can be partitioned into a plurality of master blocks of an equal master block size. Each master block of the plurality of master blocks can be allocated for storage of a single storage page size of a plurality of predefined storage page sizes provided for storage of data by a data storage application. A received page size can be determined for a storage page designated by the data storage application for storage on the physical storage volume, and the storage page can be stored in a free block of a master block of the plurality of master blocks having the single page size equivalent to the received page size. Related methods, systems, and articles of manufacture are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20160147819
Abstract: Metadata is stored within a database for each of a plurality of objects in different frames associated with a structure descriptor (e.g., a container directory entry, etc.). The frames are part of a metadata page and each comprising an object and a header specifying a version identifier for the object and a size of the object. The structure descriptor initially is built for a first build identifier. Thereafter, upon the structure descriptor changing from the first build identifier to a second build identifier, at least one of the objects that require migration is identified. The identification is based on the version identifier for the object being different from the second build identifier. In response, the identified objects are migrated from their corresponding frame to a new frame. The new frame includes the objects and new headers that include a version identifier equal to the second build identifier.

  • Patent number: 9348833
Abstract: A plurality of data records of a data set can be stored in a plurality of main part fragments, at least one of which is an old fragment stored on-disk. A number of one or more data records in the old fragment that have been marked for deletion can be determined to be greater than a threshold number, and the old fragment can be loaded into main system memory. A merge of the old fragment can be performed to remove the one or more data records marked for deletion.

  • Patent number: 9213716
Abstract: Data records of a data set can be stored in multiple main part fragments, each of which includes a subset of the set of data records. A relative age can be assigned to each main part fragment, and a fragment-specific index segment can be created for a newest of the main part fragments. The fragment-specific index segment can provide a lookup ability for logical identifiers of data records in just the newest of the main part fragments. A multi-fragment index segment can span two or more older main fragments. The multi-fragment index segment can provide a lookup ability for logical identifiers of data records in the two or more older main part fragments.

  • Patent number: 9208180
Abstract: A database system may provide determination of statistics for a field of a database table. The determination may include determination of whether the field of the table is associated with a check table, and, if the field of the table is associated with a check table, determination of a number of distinct values of the field in the table based on a number of distinct values of the field in the check table.

  • Patent number: 9116627
Abstract: A data size characteristic of contents of a related unit of data to be written to a storage by an input/output module of a data storage application can be determined, and a storage page size consistent with the data size can be selected from a plurality of storage page sizes. The related unit of data can be assigned to a storage page having the selected storage page size, and the storage page can be passed to the input/output module so that the input/output module physically clusters the contents of the related unit of data when the input/output module writes the contents of the related unit of data to the storage. Related methods, systems, and articles of manufacture are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 9058371
Abstract: Log entries are recorded in a data storage application (such as an in-memory database, etc.) for a plurality of transactions among nodes in a node hierarchy. The node hierarchy comprises master node having a plurality of slave nodes. Thereafter, at least a portion of the master node log entries are replayed until a first replay position is reached. Next, for each slave node, at least a portion of its respective log entries are replayed until the first replay position is reached (or an error occurs). Subsequently, replay of at least a portion of the log entries of the master node that are subsequent to the first replay position is initiated by the master node in parallel to at least a portion of the replaying by the slave nodes. Related apparatus, systems, techniques and articles are also described.

  • Patent number: 9009439
Abstract: Data records of a data set can be stored in a plurality of main part fragments retained in on-disk storage. A size of the data set can be compared to an available size of main system memory. All of the plurality of main part fragments can be fully loaded into the main system memory when the available size of the main system memory is larger than the size of the data set. Alternatively, one or more of the of main part fragments can be paged into the main system memory on demand in response to a data access request when the available size of the main system memory is smaller than the size of the data set and the data access request can be satisfied by providing access to a subset of the main part fragments, or access can be provided directly to the on-disk main part fragments when the data access request involves random access for projection in the data set and the available size of the main system memory is smaller than the size of the data set.

  • Publication number: 20140279963
Abstract: A plurality of data records that comprise a data set can be stored in a plurality of main part fragments such that each main part fragment includes a subset of the set of data records. Each fragment of the plurality of main part fragments can be assigned a relative data temperature. A newly arrived data record for storage in the data set can be placed in a delta part, and a merge can be performed to add the newly arrived data record to a corresponding main part fragment. The performing of the merge can occur more quickly if the corresponding main part fragment has a higher relative data temperature than if the corresponding main part fragment has a lower relative data temperature.
