Patent number: 5497551Abstract: A handle assembly for a safety razor comprises a grip portion formed of a pair of shells mounted on a substantially planar body member. The shell members cover only the periphery of the top and bottom surfaces of the body member which is fabricated of a first element formed of a substantially flexible elastomeric material and a second element formed of a more rigid material. The second element is sandwiched between the top and bottom surfaces of the first element, or imbedded within the first element by a molding process.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1994Date of Patent: March 12, 1996Assignee: The Gillette CompanyInventor: Domenic V. Apprille, Jr.

Patent number: 5249361Abstract: A razor blade body in the form of a cartridge structure includes a guard member assembled thereon forward of, and extending parallel to, the blade or blades. The guard is of a two part molded structure having an upper portion of elastomeric material with a plurality of upwardly projecting protrusions formed thereon and a lower base portion of rigid plastic material having a downwardly projecting V-shaped cross-sectional portion. A pair of upwardly projecting elements are disposed in spaced relation forming a recess on the blade cartridge structure for receiving the V-shaped base portion therebetween and a latch means disposed in the recess retains the guard member in the assembled position.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1992Date of Patent: October 5, 1993Assignee: The Gillette CompanyInventors: Domenic V. Apprille, Jr., Gary R. Miller, Frank E. Brown, John B. Taylor

Patent number: 5157835Abstract: A razor handle assembly comprising a grip portion formed of a pair of shells mounted on opposite sides of a substantially flat planar body member. The pair of shells extend downwardly at an angle beyond one end of the planar body member and form a housing containing operative structure responsive to a pair of opposed buttons extending outwardly from the housing sides to provide attachment of a razor blade assembly onto the handle.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1991Date of Patent: October 27, 1992Assignee: The Gillette CompanyInventors: Daniel B. Lazarchik, Domenic V. Apprille, Jr.

Patent number: 5050301Abstract: A razor assembly of the wet-shave type comprising a razor handle, a head portion extending from the razor handle, the head portion having therein a cavity therein. A spring retention chamber disposed in the handle portion, and a spring member comprising a foot portion retained by the spring retention chamber, a stem portion connected at a first end to the foot portion, the stem portion extending from the foot portion toward the head portion, a flange portion fixed to a second end of the stem portion, and blade assembly connector structure on the flange portion, said connector structure being connected to a blade assembly disposed in the cavity, the spring member being adapted to facilitate pivotal movement of the blade assembly during a shaving operation, the spring member being operative to urge the blade assembly to a neutral position in the razor head cavity.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1990Date of Patent: September 24, 1991Assignee: The Gillette CompanyInventor: Domenic V. Apprille, Jr.

Patent number: 4756082Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a shaving cartridge for use with a razor handle having a pair of cartridge engaging shell rocker bearings biased toward one another each of which has at least one undercut rocker bearing for receiving the cartridge. The cartridge has at least one blade thereon and has curved under surfaces pivotal upon and relative to the rocker bearing surfaces of the cartridge engaging shell rocker bearings. At least one protrusion extends from the curved under surfaces of the cartridge and is positioned to engage the shell rocker bearing surfaces on the cartridge when the cartridge is introduced to the shell bearings of the handle to bar reverse insertion of the cartridge in the handle so that the shaving blade of the cartridge when rockably engaged within the grip of the shell bearings is in a shaving ready position every time avoiding accidental reversal of the cartridge and its cutting blades when positioned on the handle for shaving.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1987Date of Patent: July 12, 1988Inventor: Domenic V. Apprille, Jr.

Patent number: 4742909Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a plurality of individual protective safety razor head unit open top casings and a tray for storing the plurality of casings in side-by-side relationships. Each of the casings are adapted to retain a single safety razor cartridge unit therein, each of which have at least one blade and a head cartridge member to which the blade is permanently secured and which also provides a guard surface. The head unit is detachably engageable with a safety razor handle. Each casing defines a single chamber in which a single shaving head unit is retained. The structure in each casing retains the head unit therein against accidental removal in such a manner that the cutting edge of the blade is protected against damage and wherein the head unit is engageable by the handle while the head unit is still within the casing. Each head unit when engaged with the handle is withdrawable from its casing by means of rocking the handle.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1987Date of Patent: May 10, 1988Inventors: Domenic V. Apprille, Jr., Michael J. Gray, Chester F. Jacobson, Ronald P. Weston

Patent number: 4624051Abstract: A shaving unit comprises at least one blade and blade support structure that has external guard and cap surfaces for engaging the user's skin respectively ahead and rearwardly of the blade edge or edges. A shaving aid member of extrusion-oriented polymeric material that includes an effective amount of a water-leachable shaving aid composition is permanently and substantially immovably affixed to the support structure with an upper surface protruding above one of the external skin engaging surfaces adjacent the cutting edge of the blade.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1984Date of Patent: November 25, 1986Assignee: The Gillette CompanyInventors: Domenic V. Apprille, Jr., Ralph J. Chesnauskas, Chester F. Jacobson, Robert A. Trotta
