Abstract: Methods of reducing breast cancer risk in an individual exposed in utero to an elevated estrogenic environment, where the individuals are identified by obtaining a measurement of at least one of: (a) DNMT1 expression; (b) methylation of normally unmethylated CpG islands of tumor suppressor genes; and (c) polycomb target genes, in cells obtained from the individual and comparing the measurement to a statistical level of a population not exposed in utero to an elevated estrogenic environment. Methods of reducing breast cancer risk in such an individual can be reduced by administering at least one DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) and/or histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor. The administration of these inhibitors may be part of a treatment regime which may include the administration of at least one anti-cancer agent.
